So what is a cybertool? • That is a good question • NSF doesn’t even know the answer • Maybe Hector does since he wrote the report • However, NSF is about to spend $200M/year on cybertools • Part of a new monster funding stream by NSF ($1B/year) • Lots of hype, no substance, piles of cash • We need to be at the table

CyperInfrastructure • Hardware and software infrastructure for facilitation of e-science: • Use of computer models to study physical phenomenon in all areas (biology, medicine, oceanography, geography, …) • These guys have huge computational demands • These guys have huge data management problems • We have failed to help out except for a few exceptions (Gray and Sloan Sky Survey) • Our technology has actually hindered progress • Objectivity failure at CERN and Sloan

Deja vu • Mid 1980s - database toolkits, ADT Ingres, OR DBMS, OO databases driven by needs of non-traditional applications • OR “won” but e-science folks are not big users • E-science models typically operate as a sequence of processes which consume and produce massive data sets. • No need for transactions • Lost data can be generated • Can be cheaper to reprocess the data rather than move a massive intermediate data set across the country

  5. Cyberinfrastructure Data Management Needs • Meta data management • Geographic distribution and replication • Support for lineage • Move computation algorithms into DBMS Server? • Dust of the Stonebraker/Gray/Dozier EOSDIS proposal? • …
