    1. Teaching the Olympic Martial Arts (Taekwondo, Judo & Wrestling) David Curby, EdD Thank you for coming. I am glad to be here today representing NIU I want to thank District 219 and NNHS for allowing me the freedom to experiment and the support to implement quality physical education programs. First a definition Martial arts are systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat. The word 'martial' derives from the name of Mars, the Roman god of war. The term 'martial arts' literally means arts of war. In popular culture, the term "Martial Arts" often specifically refers to the combat systems that originated in Asian cultures. However, the term actually refers to any sort of codified combat systems, regardless of origin. Thank you for coming. 2. My Objectives: Promote an understanding of the basics of three outstanding Olympic sports. Share methods of safely combining all three in a secondary introductory unit. Identify what these activities have to offer to a well-rounded skill and fitness based curriculum. Encourage interested teachers to establish similar units in their curriculum. While boxing and fencing can be considered to be Martial Arts or Combative Sports, I selected Taekwondo, Judo, and Wrestling as the Olympic Martial Arts to be included in my Physical Education curriculum. Flexibility Tumbling Strength Physical Education curricula are most often the result of the confluence of facilities, expertise, interest and energy! While boxing and fencing can be considered to be Martial Arts or Combative Sports, I selected Taekwondo, Judo, and Wrestling as the Olympic Martial Arts to be included in my Physical Education curriculum. 14. Judo Judo, which is translated as the "gentle way", teaches the principle of flexibility in the application of technique. This is the flexible or efficient use of balance, leverage, and movement in the performance of Judo throws and other skills. Skill, technique and timing, rather than the use of brute strength, are the essential ingredients for success in Judo. For example, in Judo classes you may learn how to give way, rather than use force, to overcome a stronger opponent. 18. Judo Kesa-Getami Shoulder Throw (Seoi Naga) We begin on the knees with a simple collar and elbow grip and try some simple off-balancing moves. A simple hold down technique can be safely done live after a little practice. We begin the shoulder throw with the thrower on their knees and emphasize the need to tuck and roll. We tie this move into an act of self defense. On our feet we also practice some inside sweeps or trips. 24. Nubians from Sudan A thousand feet above the Bongoi river in the Lafit Mts, where Abyssinia, Kenya, Uganda and the Belgian Congo huddle round the southern tip of the Sudan, is Ilyeu village, home of the Latuko tribe. The Latukos are amongst the most primitive people in Africa today. Until 1863 they have never seen a white man and until very recently a Latuko was not reckoned a man until his spear had been wetted in human blood. British administration has stopped tribal wars which have now been replaced by spectacular hunts involving great courage and accuracy with the spear. The wrestlers' bodies are coated thickly with oil, which makes them more difficult to grip and keeps competition fierce. Champions from eight weight divisions are rewarded with money and prizes. Concerts, fairs and traditional sports like wrestling, archery and horse racing are held during the celebration. 27. Japanese Sumo Sumo (?? Sumo) is a competition contact sport where two wrestlers called rikishii face off in a circular area. The sport is of Japanese origin and is surrounded by ceremony and ritual. The Japanese consider Sumo a gendai budo: a modern Japanese martial art, even though the sport has a history spanning many centuries. The Sumo tradition is very ancient, and even today the sport includes many ritual elements, such as the use of salt for purification, from the days Sumo was used in the Shinto religion. The winner of a Sumo bout is mainly determined by two rules: The first person to touch the ground with any part of his person other than the soles of his feet loses. The first person to touch the ground outside the ring loses. Sumo (?? Sumo) is a competition contact sport where two wrestlers called rikishii face off in a circular area.
