  2. It’s estimated that around two billion tonnes of food goes to waste worldwide every single year. In an attempt to prevent this figure from increasing, the French national assembly has recently passed a bill that will ban supermarkets from throwing away or destroying unsold food. The unsold food will then either be donated to charities or turned into animal feed. It is now time for us to follow in France’s footsteps, as the UK wastes more food than any other country in the EU. There is already one charity in the UK that is fighting food waste and hunger: FareShare redistributes surplus food from the industry to charities and community groups throughout the country.

Last year alone, they redistributed 4,200 tonnes of food – enough to feed over 50,000 people every day.   However, with demand for the service increasing by 20% year-on-year, a law similar to the French one could help further. It’s easy for us to blame the industry for the staggering levels of food waste, but with around half of all food thrown away - equivalent to seven million tonnes - coming from UK homes, it’s important that individuals take action too. The main reasons that Brits waste so much food is because people don’t plan their meals around the use-by dates, so fresh food ends up going off before it has been eaten, and because people prepare too much when cooking for their family.

Despite the amount of avoidable food waste having fallen by around a fifth since 2007, the current level of food waste is still costing the average household £470 annually, and those with children could be throwing as much as £700 in the bin every year.   It’s sad to hear of so much edible good and money being wasted at a time when the number of people using the Trussell Trust’s food banks has soared to over one million people, for the first time. We ask consumers to stop and take some simple steps to prevent as much food ending up in the bin.”
