  1. Currently, the film industry oligopoly consists of 5 major film companies, it is also called the "Big 5". Universal Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Walt Disney Pictures and Columbia Pictures are the 5 major filmmaking companies that release a substantial number of films annually and consistently command a significant share of box office revenue in a given market. Recently, they were joined by some new big fish due to online convergence. These ‘big fish’ include Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, Google etc. The “Big 5” and the “big fish” fill almost the entire market place, which is why small companies such as Belstone Pictures struggling to release any successful product on the wide range. As an illustrative exmaple, I want to consider the difference between 2 filmmaking companies: a member of the “Big 5” – Warner Bros. Pictures and a young UK independent production company – Belstone Pictures. Warner Bros. Pictures has released lots of successful, world famous movies such as “Harry Potter”, “Suicide Squad”, “Joker” etc. Their films are always shown in almost every country, except for individual bans on screening in some countries. Their usual budget for the films starting from the beginning of the 20th is always more than $15m and it reaches more than $220m, for example the original budget for the “Man Of Steel” was $225m. Their combined worldwide Box office usually exceeds the amount of expenses by 50 or even more times. They also own lots of other companies, which makes it easier for them to create for example, soundtracks for their movies. To promote their releases WB often collaborates with different companies such as McDonald’s, LEGO, Vivid Imaginations etc. In case with McDonald’s synergy, they released a new collection of “Happy Meal” toys with character from “Wonder Woman” film. Both companies gain money from this collaboration, as McDonald’s sold lots of figures to the young fans of the move character and WB promoted their new film to wider audience. For example, children wanted to have a toy and they didn’t even know who the character is and parents got an idea of this movie, so they were more likely to choose this particular film to watch rather than other. On the other hand, there is Belstone Pictures which is not able to provide such budget for their films. The young company has only released 3 films: “Tank 432”, “Tucked” and “Tracks”. For the “Tank 432” company has spent only $1m that is significantly different from the budget of WB. And the Box Office was $22k, what connotes that their coverage probably is not global and their audience is much more smaller than WB’s. BS don’t even has any successful synergies in it’s history. The most popular and kind of famous promotion they did was during one of the film festivals in the UK. At one of the festivals where their new film was premiered, they handed out masks to the audience that matched those used in the film itself. The interesting look of some of the viewers attracted the interest of other people, thereby BS’s product saw more people. Using the example of these two filmmaking companies, I want to show the difference in the scale of production and cooperation between large and small companies.
