  3. Purpose Increase awareness on how to access Post-Secondary Education for youth and adult learners that traditionally do not pursue PSE: • Low-income • Aboriginals • Immigrants to Canada • First Generation Students

  4. Why the Y ? • Y values - respect, responsibility, caring, honesty • Y in Canada - 53 associations – active in 250 communities • Y reach – all ages • Y we know children – we are the largest Canadian licensed childcare provider (founder of Playing to Learn and A Place to Connect Curriculums) • Y national leadership – YMCA of GTA – second largest YMCA in North America • Y Research – YMCA Teen and Young Adult Strategy & Adolescent Brain Development Research

  6. YMCA Learning Adolescent Brain Development We know that… • The pre-frontal cortex, home of the “executive functions” is not fully developed in adolescents. It is therefore unavailable as they make decisions that will impact their lives • Adolescents need the “scaffolding” that adults provide • Parent & adult involvement is vital to adolescent health & well-being • The absence of adults in young people’s lives creates serious risk to their health & well-being. “Teen and Young Adult Strategy”, YMCA of Greater Toronto, August 2007

  8. Access Network The Canada Millennium Scholarship Foundation has laid the groundwork for the creation of a virtual access network as a component of the Partnership. The access network is a membership-based network of community access service providers, post-secondary institutions, not-for-profit partners, researchers and corporations interested in workforce development. The network’s mandate: Provide an ongoing source of professional development opportunities and training • Act as a clearinghouse for new ideas, resources and applied research • Be a platform for joint advocacy • Constitute a forum for international exchange and collaboration • Act as a vehicle to channel broad-based national efforts aimed at improving post-secondary access in Canada through fundraising and social marketing • Host conferences or workshops

You Can Go YOU CAN GO access workers help youth and their parents/guardians: • Explore future career paths and employment options that fit their interests • Discover why a post-secondary education is a step to seriously consider • Identify post-secondary programs at various colleges, universities, technical institutes or apprenticeship programs that would set them off on their chosen career path • Select the programs and school(s) most likely to meet their needs and assist them in completing their applications • Connect with support services at post-secondary institutions to help ease the transition and improve their chances of success

Delivery Methods (cont’d) • Education System Presentations (provincial focus) i.e. Ontario Education System for Students and Ontario Education System for Parents • Career Focused Events Guest Speakers from different occupations speak about their educational path • One-on-one Individual Meetings for Post-Secondary Education information (with an initial needs assessment) • Campus Tours

Information Collection • WEST (Web Enabled Student Tracking System) Database Case Management System • Records relevant participant information • Provides a quick snapshot on progress • Allows us to understand our participant base and how we are serving them • Gives a clear picture on the communities served and identifies potential national best practices
