  9. Home Pages • Home page • Default for IE6 is MSN Web page • School’s Web page • Change it to whatever page you like • Web page – individual page of information • Text • Links • Pictures • Web site – group of related Web pages

Home Pages and Portals • Web sites like MSN, AOL, Ebay, and Yahoo provide portals • Portals are pages that contain links to other sites: weather, news, maps, search engines, etc. • To set the current page as the home page • Tools | Internet Options • General tab • Use Current button under Home Page

Using the Address Bar • The Address Bar displays the Web address (URL) for the current Web site • Uniform Resource Locator (URL) • http://www.prenticehall.com/catalog/index.html • http – Hypertext Transfer Protocol • :// - separates the protocol from the rest • www.prenticehall.com – domain name • /catalog/index.html – path and page name

  15. Protocols • Protocol – a method of communication • Web sites use http protocol • http:// doesn’t have to be included in the address • ftp – File Transfer Protocol – used to upload and download files • ftp and other protocols must be included in the address

  16. Domain Names • Have two or more parts • www is commonly used but not necessary • Name of the business or organization • Domain type • .com – commercial • .edu – education • .gov – government • .org – organization • Country code – .ca .fr .uk

  17. IP Addresses • Each domain name is assigned an IP address • IP – Internet Protocol – method that enables a URL to find the domain specified • The domain name is translated into the IP address • 206.44.183.67

  24. Setting History Options • History list tracks the most recently-visited sites • Default setting is last 20 days • To change History settings • Tools | Internet Options on the menu bar • Clear History Button • Days to keep pages in history

  32. Search the Internet • Search engines – programs that search the Internet for sites containing specific text • Search for “computer training” including the quotes will look for the phrase • Without the quotes it searches for two words finding many more matches

Download Files • Save files to local computer so they are available when not connected to the Internet • Web pages are saved as hypertext markup language (.html .htm) files • IE6 creates a new folder to save page, graphics etc. • Add to Favorites - saves the page when the option “Make the page available offline” is selected
