Background Introduction on Global Memory Net • A NSF/IDLP Project • Ending the first 5-year phase • Great to have the visiting researchers with fantastic background and expertise to help us to push to envelop… • Challenge us with multilingual requirement • Etc… • Hard working in integrated environment – our own assistants led by Peishan also work together… • System wise – we have develop from version 1 to v.2 to v.3 and now in v.4, 4.1, 4.2 • Expansion of contents… to truly “global.”

Vietnam is a multi-ethnic country, which is composed of 54 ethnic groups • On November 12, 1997, the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology inaugurated its permanent exhibition and officially opened to the public. • VME to preserve and present the cultural heritages of ethnic groups. • VME is scientific research, collection, documentation, conservation, exhibition and preserving the cultural and historic patrimony of the nation’s different ethnic groups

VME - A valuable centre for the exhibition and the preservation of cultural heritages of the 54 ethnic groups • the Museum has collected 15,000 artifacts, 2,190 slides, 42,000 photographs, 237 audiotapes, 373 videotapes and 25 CD-ROMs. • It is also a centre for ethnographic research employing many experts on the different ethnic groups. • People come to the Museum to learn about these ethnic groups, their cultural diversity and the uniqueness of each group and region, as well as traditional values throughout the Vietnamese country

  8. The artifacts of the Museum are not only priceless antiquities, but many are everyday objects • The Museum has 54 collections of each individual ethnic group. Functionally classified, there are collections of clothing, jewelry, of agricultural tools, fishing instruments, weapons, household utensils and musical instruments . • In addition, there are collections of artifacts related to the various religions, beliefs, wedding ceremonies, funeral ceremonies and other social and spiritual activities

  9. VME images collection introduced as a part of GMN • Images of the 54 Vietnam ethnic groups –metadata in both Vietnamese and English. • Costume of 54 ethnic group by Vietnamese and English. • Dao painting by Vietnamese and English.

  18. The beginning of Thailand Memory:HRH Princess Mother and HRH Princess Sirindhorn • Help to scan images from Thai Library Association and Simmons Archive • Thai Memory will be a part of Prof. Chen’s keynote speech at ICADL meeting in Bangkok in December 2005.

  19. Involving in working with Japanese mapsprovided by The Library of Congress • Library of Congress is collaborating with Prof. Chen on several unique collections, one of which is the unique ancient Inoh maps. • Images and Metadata in Japanese and English are provided by LC.

  29. . Vietnam Museum of Ethnology was constructed on December 14, 1987. Under Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences. About us Museum is scientific research, collection, documentation, conservation, exhibition and preserving the cultural and historic patrimony of the nation’s different ethnic groups. The museum also serves to guide research, conservation, and technology that are specific to the work of an ethnographic museum.

My Involvement with GMNet Nguyen Thanh Son Audio visual Dept Working in Global Memory Net : - Digital photos adjustment by PhotoShop - Metadata in English for some of the Vietnam metadata We want to thank Peishan for her English editing - Sound processing with resulted Flash files for Musical collection - Multimedia video editing by Final Cut Pro, Video Converter, and Window Movies Maker… Work differs greatly from film making, so has learned a great deal in working with Prof. Chen in creating digital videos for GMNet.

It marked the start of the famous "Silk Road" that linked China with central Asia and the Roman Empire. And it served as the first capital of a unified China and capital of 11 dynasties periodically from the 11th century B.C. to the early 10th century A.D. Xi'an, or Chang'an as it was called in ancient times, is known as the city of "Everlasting Peace." Located between rivers and mountains in the center of the fertile Guanzhong Plain in Shaanxi Province, Xi'an--the provincial capital--was a natural place to nurture the nation's civilization. 13 dynasties capital in Xi’an in chinese history.

Works here • Image scanning, processing and prepare metadata for relevant images records in both English and Chinese. • Simplify GMNet’s PHP program code. • Resolve dynamic image watermark in PHP. • Now working on PSU’s SIMPLIcity, responsible for gathering different data records and preparing for Run in SIMPLIcity. • Develop the run procedure in Linux shell scripts. • Some More activities to come, such as statistics, etc… ? • …try my best to do more things.
