Emergency Management Mission To maximize survival and preservation of life, property, and the environment in the event of any natural or human-caused disaster, or major accident affecting any city or rural area by making the best utilization of available personnel, equipment, facilities and supplies or other resources. (precise wording may vary by county)

Emergency ManagementObjectives • Promote a strong organization structure through which local government, business, industry and private citizens can best prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate against all types of hazards, including terrorism as a part of homeland security. • Assist local governments, business, industry, and private citizens to establish and maintain an effective program of emergency management.

The Emergency Management Coordinator is …… • A vital ingredient in development of an effective comprehensive Emergency Management System • Serves the jurisdiction as the “cement” that holds together all the parts of the integrated emergency management system. • Key leader in the planning process • Serves as “Chief Advisor” to Elected Officials in an emergency or disaster response • A “coordinator” of emergency operations • Supporter of mitigation efforts in the jurisdiction

  5. Legal Authority • Required by Iowa Code • Governed by an Emergency Management Commission as per Iowa Code – Chapter 29C.9 • The Commission 1 Board of Supervisors (or designee) 1 Sheriff (or designee) 1 Mayor from each City within the County (or designee)
