  3. The subject I’m going to deal with doesn’t concern Easter, from a religious point of view, but it has to do with Easter anyway and I am sure it will intrigue you !!! The first Egg, belonging to a series of 57 specimen, renowned for its beauty, preciousness, and inventiveness, still today the aim of very refined collectors, was commissioned to the famous jeweller Fabergé, by CzarAlexander III of Russia, as an Easter surprise for his wife Maria Fyodorovna. Itwas 1885. Outside it was covered with opaque white enamel, and its structure was very much like that of Chinese boxes or Russian matriosks: inside there was a golden yolk, containing in its turn a little hen made with multicolour enamels and gold, with rubies for eyes. The latter had inside a miniature copy of the imperial crown with an egg-shaped ruby inside. The czarina was so happy about this present that Fabergé was appointed by Alexander “Court Jeweller”, and commissioned to make every year an Easter Egg for the czarina; the one condition was that each egg should be unique and contain a surprise. As original as possible. The subject and look of the eggs varied greatly. For example the 1900 egg was decorated on the outer part with a grey metal band on which the stages of the railway route were engraved, but had inside a whole train, very tiny and in gold. The tradition of the Fabergé Easter Egg, as a present from the Czar to the Czarina, continued with the accession to the throne of Nicholas II and his wife Alexandra of Assia. The last two, intended for 1916-1917 Easter, were not delivered: quite different sceneries had opened for Russia with October Revolution and with the tragic extermination of the whole Romanov family. 4.
