    2. 2 What does housing have to do with health? A lot. As we all know, as we get older, it is harder to fight off illness. What does housing have to do with health? A lot. As we all know, as we get older, it is harder to fight off illness.

    3. 3 What does my home have to do with my health? We spend more time at home -where pollution is often worse than outdoors. Grandkids can be exposed to hazards lead poisoning, pests, tobacco smoke. We hear a lot about outdoor air pollution and it is something to worry about. But air pollution is often much higher indoors than out. And indoors, in our homes, is where most seniors spend most of our time more than 90%. So making sure that the home environment is healthy makes a lot of sense. Another thing to think about is that many of us have grandkids visiting, some spending a good deal of time in our apartments. We need to be aware of things that could make them sick. We hear a lot about outdoor air pollution and it is something to worry about. But air pollution is often much higher indoors than out. 5. 5 who is responsible? Some hazards are created by residents themselves. Some are problems with the building. . One thing that always comes up is, who is responsible? Lets face it. Sometimes it is our own behavior than creates health problems in the home. And sometimes there are building conditions that are causing the problems. As we talk about home health hazards we will try to sort out who is responsible for what. One thing that always comes up is, who is responsible? Lets face it. 6. 6 Quick survey First, lets take a survey to get an idea what people already know about indoor health hazards. This is not a test. These questions give us an idea what you already know and help you start thinking about the healthy homes. While the surveys are not a test, we are using them to check if the training works. 8. 8 unhealthy home Damp excess moisture leads to mold and pests. Stuffy - dirty air doesnt leave; clean doesnt get in. Too hot or too cold stress on the body. Pests allergic reactions and asthma. [Comment on which things from the generated list are on this list, which things are new on this list and which things on the generated list are not on this list. But for now we are only going to talk about this list.] An unhealthy house is damp, stuffy, too hot or cold and pest-infested. When there is too much moisture in a home, there is a damp feel. That can lead to mold growth and pests. An apartment is stuffy when there is no way for dirty air to get out and no way for fresh air to come in. When it is too hot or too cold, there is stress on the body that can make other health conditions worse. Many people are allergic to roaches and rodents and that can make breathing problems worse. 9. 9 unhealthy home Polluted pesticides, cleaning products, sprays and combustion gases. Dusty & dirty can contain harmful substances. Cluttered - makes it hard to clean and hard to control pests. An unhealthy house is also air polluted, dusty & dirty, and cluttered. Chemicals get in the air from sprays and things with strong odors. Even sweet-smelling products, like air fresheners and cleaners, can be exposing you to harmful and irritating chemicals. Gases can get into the air from space heaters and the furnace. Many of the things that are irritants or that we are allergic to build up in dust and dirt. 11. 11 Pests and Pesticides Pests are a problem - but so are bug sprays. Roaches & rodents can make breathing problems worse Bug sprays can also cause health problems. The health worry for pests and pesticides is both for you and for grandchildren who visit. There are chemicals in roach droppings and roach body parts that many people are allergic to. These chemicals get into the household dust. Moving around the apartment can stir up the dust, so that we breathe the chemicals. Sitting down on a couch, chair or bed can stir up the dust. It is especially a problems for kids that are playing on the floor because they are close to a lot of dust. There are similar chemicals in rat and mouse urine and droppings that can make breathing problems worse. The problem is that spray pesticides also have chemicals that may cause health problems. Spraying puts the stuff in the air and it gets into the dust, just like the roach droppings and parts. What are some safer ways to get rid of roaches? I will list them. 12. 12 Roaches Dont use sprays or foggers. Use gel baits and boric acid products. Dont make life easy for roaches. [Compare the list with the slide and comment. Some of the points below can be covered as the list is constructed. Show the products and demonstrate their use. The extent of the comments below will depend on the level of interest in roaches.] Roach sprays, foggers and bombs dont work (the roaches run away and then come back) and leave dangerous chemicals in the home environment. Boric acid is an old time roach control product that also works very well. Shoot the powder into cracks and openings where the roaches hide. Dont put it where kids can get to it. The baits and boric acid products are safer than the spray pesticides, but you still dont want kids to get to them. Gel baits in tubes or bait stations work great. They have a food smell that attracts the roaches and they have a slow-acting poison. The roach eats some of the bait, goes back to the hiding place and dies there. Then their relatives and neighbors eat them and they die too. So for each roach that eats some bait, several other roaches die maybe 20 or 30. The bait stations are better than the roach motels or even the roach prison which kill roaches one at a time. [Compare the list with the slide and comment. 13. 13 [Go into the following detail only if there is interest.] To work best, apply the gel bait from the tube in tiny amounts in several places, as close as possible to where you think the roaches live or eat. Good places are behind the stove or fridge, under the sink, in the door frame (through the latch opening). Put the gel and stations where kids cant get to them. Dont use spray pesticides along with the baits, that will keep the roaches away from the baits. Roaches love gel baits, so they work great. But they dont love them more than cookie crumbs, or jelly. If there is other food around, roaches may never get to the baits. So baits are not enough. You also have to make sure that roaches dont have easy access to food, water and hiding places. What does it take to do this? Lets make another list. 15. 15 Getting rid of roaches works best when all units are using the same strategy. For example, if one unit uses sprays, roaches could be chased to other units. Or if one unit has very poor sanitation and lots of roaches, they can spill over into other units. So it is always best if everybody is following the roach control plan. However, even if there are other units in the building with roaches, by following these methods there is a very good chance that you can keep your unit roach-free. EHW staff have a good example of this. They were working in some public housing units to get rid of roaches. When they first started, many of the units had roach problems, but one did not. It was a unit with a mother and 9 children. The place was immaculate and no roaches. Getting rid of roaches works best when all units are using the same strategy. 16. 16 Too cold Kerosene heaters are dangerous. Dont use stoves for heat. Pick the right electric space heater dont get burned. Electric heaters are safer, if you have the right kind. Dont use an electric heater that can burn you. Generally, the type that look like a radiator are best. It is dangerous to use kerosene and stoves for heat. They produce dangerous gases and can actually use up the oxygen in the room. And while we are talking about heating, furnace filters should be changed every year and a pleated filter should be used to reduce indoor pollution. Here is a guide on Staying Warm Safely. 17. 17 Too hot Serious health concern. Use window fan to take out hot air during the day bring in cool air in the evening. Shade the sunny side of the apartment during the day. Excess heat puts a great stress on the body. As we get older, we are less able to deal with heat. People can die from days of excess heat with no relief. Drink lots of fluids (unless your doctor says restrict fluids). Go out to an air-conditioned areas library, store, senior center. Central air conditioning (if it works) or an air conditioner in your unit (if it works) is great. When using AC, keep windows shut reduces effectiveness, increases electricity use, and increases moisture in the home (warm humid air from outside condenses on cold interior surfaces and water drips down). Dont leave the door to the hall open, it just lets warm air in and cool air out. Fans can make a big difference moving air is much more cooling. Use a window fan that can be reversed. During the day, face the fan out to blow out hot air. At night, when outside air is cooler, turn the fan to face in to blow cooler air into the apartment. Dont put it in a west side window because the air is hotter. Block the sun during the day with shades and curtains to reduce the heat. 18. 18 Tobacco Smoke Bad for the smoker; bad for others in the home. Best to quit; hard to do. Smoke outside to reduce exposure for others. One of the most important things you can do for your grandkids. By now, everybody knows how bad tobacco smoke is. Not just for the smoker, but for everybody else in the house, especially for children and for people with breathing problems. Tobacco smoke has hundreds of toxic chemicals. The smoke can linger for days. If you can smell the smoke odor it is bad for you.By now, everybody knows how bad tobacco smoke is. 19. 19 Whats wrong here?

    20. 20 MOLD Many people are allergic to molds can make breathing problems worse. So-called black mold is a worry for infants. To get rid of mold, get rid of excess moisture. Mold inside a home is unhealthy. Many people with breathing problems are allergic to mold, which can make the problems worse. Who has heard about black mold? In Cleveland, a few years ago, you may remember, several infants got very sick, some even died from a bleeding lung disease. And that infant illness seemed to be related to mold exposure. If there is an infant in a home with mold, the Health Department will come out and evaluate the danger. Mold needs water to grow. No water no mold. The only way to get rid of mold in a home is to figure out where the moisture is coming from and stop it. Any activity that produces steam or moisture can cause water to collect on surfaces. 21. 21 Cleaning mold Landlords responsibility. Large area requires professional. Small areas of mold, you may be able to clean. Factsheet - Cleaning Mold The landlord is responsible for cleaning all but the smallest areas of mold. Large areas may require a professional. You can clean up small amounts of mold by scrubbing with a brush and detergent; throw the rags or paper towels away; dry completely. Bleach is not needed. It kills the mold, [what kills the mold? Scrubbing with detergent or bleach?] but even dead mold can cause allergic reactions. Large areas require a professional. The landlord is responsible for cleaning all but the smallest areas of mold. 22. 22 EXCESS MOISTURE Report leaks promptly. Cleanup leaks and spills right away. If things get wet, dry them quickly. Discard items soaked more than a couple of days. Water on household surfaces results in mold growth. It makes life easier for roaches. If water collects, dry it up; if water leaks make sure the leak is fixed as soon as possible. Things that stay soaked for more than a day or two will get moldy and generally cant be cleaned up. Get rid of rugs, clothing, cardboard, etc. that has been wet for more than a couple of days. Try to reduce moisture in the air that can collect on surfaces. If you have vent fans, they really help. Water on household surfaces results in mold growth. It makes life easier for roaches. Normal daily activities can put a lot of moisture in the air, such as simmering a pot of beans on the stove all day or taking a hot bath or shower. If you have kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans, use them to take moisture out of the air. Fans are not just for odors. Many people believe that humidifiers are healthy, but they are not. WHILE some doctors still suggest them, many have stopped. It is hard to use a humidifier safely. They can put too much water vapor into the air, which can cause mold to grow. And if they are not cleaned frequently and thoroughly, bacteria will grow. Water on household surfaces results in mold growth. 24. 24 Stop pollution from getting inside Most dirt in a house comes in from outside. Shoes carry lead, pesticides, oil, gasoline, pollen, etc. Door mats help a lot. Taking shoes off works best. A lot of unhealthy stuff comes into the home on our shoes lead dust, which is dangerous for young children who visit, pesticides, gasoline, oil and other things that drip from cars onto the ground. If you are allergic to tree or grass pollen, it also comes in on shoes. Door mats help keep pollution from getting inside. But they must be kept clean in order to work. Remind everyone to wipe their feet before entering your apartment. The best thing is to ask everyone that comes in to take their shoes off. 25. 25 Products that pollute Strong odor can irritate breathing moth balls, perfume, cleaning products, etc. Air fresheners dont really freshen. Mercury fever thermometers are a problem if they break. There are lots of things that we bring into the home that have chemicals that can make us sick. Especially for people with asthma or COPD, anything with a strong odor, EVEN IF IT IS SWEET-SMELLING, can irritate the breathing tubes and lungs. Moth balls are especially bad. Many cleaning products have strong smells that we associate with clean, but that doesnt mean that they actually work any better. The fact that we think a pine smell means clean is just a successful advertising campaign. If odors bother you, listen to your body and use a different product. Air fresheners dont actually freshen the air they pollute it. 28. 28 Getting the landlord to make the repairs Landlord has a legal duty to fix certain things -water leaks, heat, ventilation. You must give them written notice of the problem. Keep a copy!!!! Many of the things we have talked about are the landlords responsibility. If they fail to do what they are supposed to do we have rights to push them to do the right thing. Many of the things we have talked about are the landlords responsibility. 29. 29 Getting the landlord to make the repairs Landlord has maximum of 30 days to make repairs. Tenants can rent-strike at the Court, if repairs are not made. It is illegal for a landlord to retaliate. If the landlord doesnt fix the problem, you have rights!!!! Whatever you do, make sure you follow the law. A landlord cannot retaliate against you for complaining. If they fail to fix things, after written notice of the problem has been given, you can deposit your rent with the Court. It is easy to do, and CTO can help. 432-0609. Important Note: You are not allowed to just withhold rent. You must either pay it to the landlord or deposit it with the Court. 30. 30 Strength in Numbers When tenants have common concerns, make demands together. Use petitions. This is common sense, but where we have common problems in the building, we should make our concerns known jointly. We should document as much as possible. Petitions to management with lots of signatures are good documentation. This is common sense, but where we have common problems in the building, we should make our concerns known jointly. 31. 31 Document, Document, Document!!! Take photos. Write things down when they happen. Keep logs. The important thing about protecting your rights and getting the landlord to make repairs is to keep good records.
