  1. Task : homework essay • How successful was the New Deal? (10 marks). People are still arguing as to whether the New Deal was a success or failure. You will need to weigh up the evidence by giving points for and against the new deal and then come to a conclusion which you support with reasons.

  2. How to answer the essay question. • Introduction : • refer briefly to the state of the US in 1932 • the election of FDR and what he promised – the basic aims of the New Deal ( The 3 R’s = relief, recovery and reform )

  3. How to answer the essay question cont: • First paragraph : successes of the New Deal. Did it meet any of its aims? • Decide what were the most significant successes : Eg. Agriculture & The AAA, TVA & CCC. Say what the successes were • Industry : NRA, CWA & WPA • 2nd New Deal – provided lasting reform : Social Security Act & Wagner Act. Say what the successes were.

  4. How to answer the essay question cont: • Second paragraph: failures of the New Deal. • Decide what were the most significant failures of the New Deal. Eg. Failure to help the sharecroppers, dust bowl of 1934/35, failure to end unemployment • criticism of the New Deal from those who felt it went too far & those who felt it did not go far enough, Supreme court, slump of 1937/8

  5. The Conclusion • You must evaluate the New Deal. This means weigh up the evidence and decide whether on balance you think the New Deal was a success or failure and support your evaluation with appropriate evidence.

  6. Alternative Answer Style • For those of you who feel more confident : • instead of writing one paragraph on successes and one on failures you could try to counter balance each argument & example of a success with an argument & example of a failure
