WomeninIndiatodayarenomorethepainbearers.They havesustainedtheorthodoxyofthesocietyandhavecome upfrontwiththeissuesofinequalityasagainstmen.Gone arethedayswhenwomenwerenotallowedtostepoutof thehousewhiletodaytheyarethemajorfrontrunnersin nearlyallthefields,beitbusinessoreducation.And indisputably,they’vebeendoinggreatwhichisevidentfrom theircontributionandachievementsindifferentfields. Soaretheruralwomenwhohavebeena massiveinexorableforcebehindtheevolutionand prosperityofIndianDairyIndustry.Thesizeofthedairy industryinIndiaiscolossalintermsofthenumberof farmers,milkunionsandcooperativesocietiesassociated withit.AboutaquarterofthetotalmembersoftheIndian DairyIndustryarewomenandtheirunceasingendeavors haveempoweredthenationtobecometheleadingmilk producerintheworld.Thedairyindustryfollowsaspecific processformilkproduction,collectionandprocurement whilethemilkproducersincludingwomenareemployedat eachstageofthiscourse.Therearevariousrolesthatrural womenadorewhilebeingacrucialpartintheprogressof nationbuildingprocess.Let’swalkthroughtheir responsibilitiesandhowtheyhavemanagedtocontribute theirparttothedevelopmentoftheIndianDairyIndustry.

FeedingandWatering Accordingtoaresearchconductedtostudythe participationofruralwomenacrossdifferentoperationsof dairyfarming,thestudyrevealedthatabout80% ofthe womenareinvolvedinfeedingandwateringofanimals. Thekeyactivitiestheytakeupunderthisdomaininclude takinganimalsoutforgrazing,foddercollection,chaffing offodder,feedinganimals,storageoffeed & fodder,and wateringtheanimals. Management Livestockmanagementisanothercoreactivitywhere womenactivelygetinvolved.Theoperationsfollowedare constructionandcleaningofanimalsheds,washingand groominganimals,milking,disposalofcowdung,and maintainingfarm & dairyrecords.Thesamestudyas mentionedaboverecordedthat85% ofwomenare engagedinmilkingthecattle. Breeding Breedingisoneoftheimportantactivitiestobetakencare ofatthefarmasamajorpartofyourfarmprofitdepends onit.However,thewomenparticipationinthisareaisleast owingtothesocialtaboosthatpersistinruralareas. BreedingincludestakinganimalsforArtificialInsemination (AI),naturalservice,andpregnancydiagnosis,arranging materialsduringparturition,andvisitingveterinarian duringdystocia.

HealthCare Thisfieldissomethingthatrequiressoundknowledgeand trainingonhealthofanimals.Thisincorporatestakingcare ofsickanimals,newborncalves,andpregnantanimals, puttingthemonappropriatemedication,andvaccinating themonregularbasis.While,itismostlyseenthatthe womeninmiddleandoldagetakecareofanimal healthcare.Thestudyreportedthataround82% women wereinvolvedinthisfield. ProcessingandMarketing Thisconsistsofactivitieslikeprocessingoflivestock products,saleofmilkanditsderivatives,saleand purchaseofanimals,andpurchaseoffeedandfodder. Earlier,theinvolvementofwomeninmarketingandselling activitieswasn’tacceptable.Though,overtheyearsthe scenariohaschangedforthebettertoanextentthatthere arewomenoperatedcooperativesocietieswhomanage alltheactivitiesthemselves. Closing Thoughtherehasbeenasignificantdevelopmentinthe upliftmentofwomeninIndia,bothurbanandrural,the dairyunionsneedtotakeupmoreactivitiestoenhance women’sinvolvementinmilkcooperatives.Thiscanbe achievedbyformingWomenDairyCooperatives (WDCs) andWomenThriftGroups (WTGs) andenrollingwomenin Women'sDairyCooperativeLeadershipProgram (WDCLP) tostrengthentheirparticipationinthedairyindustry.
