  2. *166 Sq Miles… about 2.5 times the size of Washingtion D.C. *Is in the North Atlantic Ocean *Northeast of Venezuela *280,946 people… Washington D.C. has 581,530 people. *1,682 people per sq. people.

  3. The Flag The two blue portions of the flag represent the sea and the sky. The gold represents the beaches of Barbados. The trident in the center comes from the sea god Neptune, it is broken to represent Barbados’s break from England.

  4. History *Believed to be first inhabited by the Arawak Indians *First discovered by the Portuguese, but became a colony of Great Britain in 1627 *Slaves were used heavily and became about 90% black, the slaves revolted in 1816 and slavery was abolished in 1834 *Barbados was granted independence in 1866 *In 1884 Barbados tried to become one of the first provinces of Canada…did not succeed

  5. Government *Barbados has a Parliamentary Democracy (Constitutional Monarchy) *Barbados’s ceremonial head of state is the non-resident monarch, Queen Elizabeth 2…also Great Britain’s queen. She uses the title Queen of Barbados only when she occasionally visits the country *The local Governor-general is her representative in Barbados and acts on the advice of the the Prime Minister *Parliament has the House of Assembly and the Senate *The 30 members of the house are elected for 5 year terms but the Prime Minister can call an election whenever Parliament gets a vote of no-confidence or want to seek a new mandate *The 21 members of the senate are appointed by the Governor-general, 12 with the advice of the Prime Minister *The Supreme Court has the High Court and the Court of Appeals with 4 judges each and the Chief Justice serving on both.

Culture *Blend of West African and British cultures-speak Bajan, or Barbadian Creole, but English is the official language *Officially 90% black, 4% white, 6% Asian and mixed *Litteracy rate : 99.7%…age 15+ and has ever attended school *Religion : 67% Protestant, 4% Roman Catholic, 17% none, 12% other

Sports *Cricket is the main sport played in Barbados and is like soccer is for Latin American countries. *Barbados hosted the 2007 Cricket World Cup *There are 11 players on eachteam…batsman and bowlers *A bowler can only pitch for an over…6 consecutive bowl *A batsman hits untill out and an innings goes untill 10 batsmen on the receiving team are out, leaving one, and the teams switch roles *The team who scores the most runs wins…you can score 6 by hitting it out of boundry, 4 if hit out and it bounces on the ground, and 1 if both batsmen move to their opposite ends of the pitch

  9. Playing There are 2 batsmen, one on each side of the pitch. The bowler pitches the ball and the striking batsman hits the ball. The batsmen have to run to opposite ends of the pitch, to score their body or bat has to touch behind the crease. There are two wicket-keepers each behind a wicket. The fielders use gloves to field and catch the ball and get it to the wicker-keepers. The batsmen can choose to run or not. When the bowler pitches the ball, if the batman misses and the ball nocks a ball off the wicket, the batsman is out.
