  1. The Current Problems With Math Education Math is one of those subjects that most of us are going to struggle with at some point in our lifetime. There is someone right now on this planet who is having a hard time finishing up their math homework as you are reading this article. Math is hard for most of us and because of this it is one of the most failed courses on campuses all over the world. This is because teachers and schools have been using the same unilateral approach to teaching math for years and there are always students who fall down the cracks. In this article we are going to look at what math education has been getting wrong and what still is happening within the mathematics community.

  2. Treating All Students The Same When I was in elementary school there were two math sections and the students referred to them as dumb math or smart math. I, along with the majority of the students, was in dumb math. I was not embarrassed at all, but I still struggled with the basics of math. This is because the teacher was treating us all the same even though our brains were like snowflakes or thumbprints. I might have trouble with addition while another student was having issues with subtraction but our teacher would approach us both in the same way. Luckily for me I was able to work with my grandmother, who was also a math teacher but other students did not have the same opportunities. Lack Of One on One Attention This goes hand in hand with the above section but also needs to be looked at under it’s own telescope. Math is hard, let’s face it. Even the greatest mathematical minds will come across problems that will put them through the wringer. There are mathematical equations that still have not been solved to this day. Having said that, when a student is constantly struggling in math and barely getting passing grades they need outside help. They need to sit down with someone several times a week and go over their personal struggles. Otherwise they are constantly going to be washed through the school system while never actually improving their skills. Emphasis On Passing And Not Learning

  3. Just because you can pass a math class does not mean that you have the skills that you actually need. The best example I can think of this was I recently met a girl who graduated at the top of her class. She got great grades in high school, including math, but when it came to simple math questions she simply could not answer them. This is because she was not learning but she was just passing the classes, doing homework and getting the grades. Life is not about grades, it is about attaining knowledge and being able to draw from that knowledge whenever you need it. In our current math system there is more of an emphasis on children passing a class than actually learning the material. This is because schools need to have the statistics at a certain spot to maintain funding and accreditation. So the school system ultimately becomes a political playground and not a place for students to learn. We have to put more of an emphasis on students actually learning if we want to see any real change within mathematics. Source : https://rapichat.com/read-blog/2582
