Gum disease - an overview

If tartar and plaque are not removed in time, the bacteria can cause an inflammation of the gums called Gingivitis. Gingivitis can be treated with regular visits to the dentists and proper brushing and flossing. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to a more severe condition called Periodontitis, where the infection spreads below the gum line and eventually lead to the bone and resulting in tooth loss. 4. Causes • Bacteria related plaque build up • Smoking • Diabetes • HIV/AIDS • Certain medications

  5. Diagnosis Review one’s medical history: To examine whether one has prior smoking habit. Mouth examination: To check whether there is deposition of plaque. Measure the pocket depth: Depth of your teeth pocket is measured by using a scale. Take dental X rays: To check for deeper pocket depths

Root planing: It smoothes the root surfaces discouraging further buildup of tartar and bacteria. Antibiotics: It control bacterial infection. It include topical antibiotics and antibiotic mouth rinses.

  8. Treatment Surgical treatments • Flap surgery: Your periodontists makes tiny incisions on your gum so that some section of your gum tissue can be lifted back exposing the roots for scaling and root planing. Periodontitis often result in bone loss, underlying bone is recontoured before the gum tissue is placed back. After healing its easier to clean these areas. • Soft tissue grafts: When your gum line recedes because of loss of gum tissue, You may need to have some soft tissue reinforced. This is done by removing small amount of tissue from roof of your mouth or other donor source and attaching to the affected site. This helps from further recession.

  9. Treatment • Bone grafting: This procedure is performed when periodontitis has destroyed the bone surrounding your tooth root. The graft may be composed of small fragments of your own bone, or the bone may be synthetic or donated. The bone graft helps prevent tooth loss by holding your tooth in place. It also serves as a platform for the regrowth of natural bone. • Guided tissue regeneration: In this dentist places a special biocompatible material between bone and teeth preventing unwanted tissue to enter the area and allowing the bone to grow that was destroyed by bacteria. • Tissue stimulating proteins: This technique involves applying a special gel to a diseased tooth root. This gel contains the same proteins found in developing tooth enamel and stimulates the growth of healthy bone and tissue.
