  2. SharePoint is a combination of two different technologies: Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) which is free and comes with Windows server 2003 and another one is Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) which isn't free. http://www.sbasetech.net/microsoft­sharepoint/

Know why it is popular: WSS is popular because it costs free and provides so much out of the box. One can solve many common office requests with WSS. Stuff like issue trackers, project management and document management are trivial in WSS. In simple, it’s a jack of all trades ­ good at many, master of none.
