  1. Change of Players Presentation Designed by Kevin M. Upton Southeast District

  2. USA HOCKEY OFFICIATING PROGRAMChange of Players During the course of a game there are three situations when a team will change its players. • During Play • Premature substitution • During stoppages

  3. USA HOCKEY OFFICIATING PROGRAMChange of Players During Play • Players may be changed on the ice any time from the players’ bench during play. (free substitution) • Official must make sure the player going to the bench is completely off the ice before the substitute PARTICIPATES IN PLAY. • If not a bench minor for too many men violation will be called. • Whenever either player is accidentally struck by the puck, there is NO PENALTY.

  4. USA HOCKEY OFFICIATING PROGRAMChange of Players Premature Substitution • Substitution for the goalkeeper can occur anytime, but occurs most often when there is a delayed penalty on the opposing team. • Back official or rear Linesman responsible for this play. • Goalkeeper must be at the bench in order for a legal player substitution to take place. Note this is a rule change for the 2001 - 2002 season. • If the goalkeeper is at or in the bench when the substitution is made the back official will stop play when the offending team has possession of the puck.

  5. USA HOCKEY OFFICIATING PROGRAMChange of Players Premature Substitution-Continued • Once play has been stopped, the official will point to the face-off spot. • If play was stopped on the attacking side of the center red line of the offending team, the face-off location is at center ice. • When play is stopped on the defending side of the center red line of the offending team, the face-off will be a last play face-off.

  6. USA HOCKEY OFFICIATING PROGRAMChange of Players During Stoppages • Each team allowed to change players once per stoppage, within a reasonable amount of time. • Home team is entitled to make the last change. • Goalkeeper cannot go to players’ bench unless given permission by the referee. • For violation of this rule, the team must either substitute for the goalkeeper or be assessed a bench minor penalty.
