  4. General Information • Be reminded of the three diploma types and the requirements for each. • Select your courses carefully. Annual registration does not permit changes to be conveniently made. • Seek help when you first discover that you do not understand a topic in your class.

  5. What Are Credits/Units? • A UNIT or CREDIT is successful completion of 2 semesters of a course (subject) of study. • A CORE UNIT includes: • ENGLISH, MATH, SCIENCE, SOCIAL STUDIES, AND WORLD LANGUAGE. • For PROMOTION to the next grade you will need: • 10TH Grade – 6 UNITS • 11TH Grade – 12 UNITS • 12TH Grade – 17 UNITS • Graduation – 24 UNITS as determined by diploma type

Grade Point Averages • CUMULATIVE GPA • ALL COURSES EARNING CARNEGIE UNIT CREDIT • 4.0 SCALE (General, Advanced, Accelerated) • A= 4 quality points, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0 • 5.0 SCALE (Advanced Placement – AP) • A=5 quality points, B=4, C=3, D=2, F=0 • To calculate • Convert letter grades to quality points • Divide by number of courses. General Information • Take classes related to your career choices. • College admissions are usually based on GPA, test scores, course difficulty, and extra-curricular activities. • Plan to take the PSAT in the 9th grade, 10th grade, and the 11th grade. • Plan to take the SAT in both the 11th grade and the 12th grade.

  10. Requirements Common to all Diplomas? • 4 units each: • English, Math, Science & Social Studies • .5 unit of Health • 1.5 units of PE • 24 total units

Diploma with Honors/Distinction Requires a 3.5 Cumulative GPA and a 3.0 Core GPA • ENGLISH - 4 UNITS:Lit./Comp 9, World Lit./Comp 10, American Lit./Comp 11, British Lit./Comp 12 • MATHEMATICS - 4 UNITS: • SAMPLE SEQUENCES • Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Algebra III • Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre Calculus • Geometry, Algebra II, PreCal., Calculus* • SCIENCE – 4 UNITS • SOCIAL STUDIES – 4 UNITS *Preferred by most highly competitive colleges and universities. Algebra I credit earned in 8th grade.

Diploma with Honors/Distinction • HEALTH/ PHYSICAL EDUCATION – 2 UNITS • (1 UNIT MAY BE EARNED THROUGH VALIDATED FULL-YEAR PARTICIPATION IN SCHOOL SPONSORED ATHLETICS, MARCHING BAND, DANCE AND /OR JROTC) • FINE ARTS ELECTIVE - 1 UNIT • WORLD LANGUAGES – 3 UNITS (the same language) • CAREER TECH - 1 UNIT • GENERAL ELECTIVES – 1 UNIT

  14. Basic College Preparatory Diploma • Fine Arts – 1 unit • World Languages – 2 units • Career Tech – 1 unit • Electives – 2 units

  15. Basic Technology Career Diploma Additional requirements for Technology Career Prep • Fine Arts – 1 unit • World Languages – 1 unit (Four-year colleges require two years) • Career Tech – 4 units

  16. Advisement Form • Review your child’s Career Path • Identify the Best diploma for your Career • Review with the Counselor your four year plan • Sign the form and retain a copy for your records • Refer to this form throughout high school

  26. Summer School If you fail a class, plan to attend summer school. Each session lasts three weeks and begins at 8 AM and ends at 12:20 PM. Last year’s fees were $250.00 per class. Registration begins in April.
