What are Hamsters? Hamsters are mammals and are part of the rodent family. They are rodents because they have two large front teeth that they use to gnaw things. This hamster is gnawing on something green. 3
Where do Hamsters Come From? Hamsters come from China and were found in the Syrian Desert 70 years ago. People found that hamsters were disease-free, friendly, and easy to handle, so they became good pets. The Syrian Desert 4
How do Hamsters Act? Hamsters are nocturnal, which means they sleep in the day and play during the night. Hamsters may run 2 miles every day. Hamsters do not fight. 5
Taking Care of Hamsters Hamsters live in burrows, so they like to have a little place to sleep in their cage. Hamsters have a water bottle and food in their cage, and their floor is filled with wood chips. Hamsters have a wheel in their cage they use for exercise. This is a hamster cage 6
The Hamster Life-Cycle Hamsters are born helpless, hairless and blind. They weigh only 2 grams (2 grams=2 smarties). Hamsters are fully grown at 3 weeks, can start having babies at 7 weeks, and live to be 2-4 years old. These 5 new baby hamsters are so tiny they can fit in one hand. 7
What do Hamsters Eat? Hamsters eat pellets, corn, carrots, sunflower seeds, bird seeds, and horse pellets. Hamsters sometimes chew on dog bones. Hamsters are omnivorous, which means they eat both vegetables and meat. But, don’t feed your hamster chocolates and other sweet things! Hamsters eat meat like insects and small birds. 8
Other Interesting Hamster Facts • Hamsters don’t like to eat garlic. • There are many types of hamsters such as the Teddy bear, Russian, Syrian, Chinese, South African and many more. • Hamsters are cousins of the beaver. • Hamsters burrow or dig tunnels in the ground that can be 8 feet deep, or as deep as the deep end of a swimming pool. 9
Glossary Burrow-A tunnel or hole in the ground used as a home by some animals like hamsters. Desert- A dry, often sandy area where hardly any plants grow because there is so little rain. Disease- sickness or illness. Gnaw- to keep biting on something. Mammal- an animal with a backbone, born with hair and babies who drink milk from their moms. Nocturnal- activity at night. Omnivorous- vegetable and meat eater. Rodent- a mammal with large, sharp front teeth it uses for gnawing things. 10
