  1. Humble Yourself and Be Taught of God.

  2. Are We Humble Before God? • Do we truly believe that “God is”? (Heb. 11:6)

  3. Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV) But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

  4. Are We Humble Before God? • Do we truly believe that “God is”? (Heb. 11:6) • Recognition of God’s greatness will humble us and cause us to see how “small” we really are in comparison to Him (Isa. 6:5).

  5. Isaiah 6:5 (NASB) Then I said, "Woe is me, for I am ruined!, Because I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts."

  6. Are We Humble Before God? • If we want to have fellowship with God and go to Heaven, we must approach the Lord with a humble spirit (Isa. 57:15; Mat. 5:3).

  7. Isaiah 57:15 (NASB) For thus says the high and exalted One who lives forever, whose name is Holy, "I dwell on a high and holy place, and also with the contrite and lowly of spirit in order to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite. • NASB

  8. Matthew 5:3 (NASB) “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

  9. To Draw Near to God, We Must Be Teachable.

  10. Psalm 25:9 (NASB) He leads the humble in justice, and He teaches the humble His way.

  11. To Draw Near to God, We Must Be Teachable. God wants people who are as humble as children(Mat. 18:1-4).

  12. Matthew 18:1-4 (NASB) 1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" 2 And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, 3 and said, "Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 "Whoever then humbles himself as this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. - cf. 1 John 3:1

  13. 1 Peter 5:6 (NASB) Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time.

  14. To Draw Near to God, We Must Be Teachable. The only way to have fellowship with God is to humble ourselves to the teachings of God. (John 6:44-45; cf. 2 Tim. 3:16-17)

  15. John 6:44-45 (NASB) “No one can come to Me, unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught of God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.”

  16. To Draw Near to God, We Must Be Teachable. God has made His word understandable (Eph. 3:3-5), it is up to each person to open his heart to the Scriptures (Luke 8:15; cf. Mat. 13:14-16).

  17. Luke 8:15 (NASB) And the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance.

  18. James 1:21 (NASB) Therefore putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.

  19. Our Attitude toward the Scriptures is Our Attitude toward God. • We don’t truly respect the Lord, if we do not do what He says (Luke 6:46; cf. Mat. 7:21-23).

  20. Luke 6:46 (NASB) “And why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?”

  21. Our Attitude toward the Scriptures is Our Attitude toward God. • We don’t truly respect the Lord, if we do not do what He says (Luke 6:46; cf. Mat. 7:21-23). • True respect for God is demonstrated by respect for His Book – The Bible (1 Thes. 2:13).

  22. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NASB) And for this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received from us the word of God's message, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.

  23. Humble Yourself to the Wisdom of God. • We cannot be taught by God if we are proud and presume to know beforehand the will of God (Isaiah 5:20-21; cf. Proverbs 3:7; 12:15; 26:12 )

  24. Isaiah 5:20-21 (NASB) 20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! 21 Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and clever in their own sight!

  25. Isaiah 55:8-9 (NASB) 8 "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways," declares the LORD. 9 "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.

  26. 1 Corinthians 1:20 (NASB) Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

  27. Humble Yourself to the Wisdom of God. • We cannot be taught by God if we are proud and presume to know beforehand the will of God. • To be spiritually complete, we must humble ourselves to be examined by the word of God.

  28. Hebrews 4:12 (NASB) For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

  29. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (KJV) 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable fordoctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instructionin righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

  30. What Does Humbling Ourselves Before God Require? • We must unload the “baggage” so we can really listen to what God says.

  31. “Unload Your Baggage”! • Personal opinions, feelings, philosophies or traditions of men, and popular opinion (Prov. 14:12; Col. 2:8; Mat. 15:9; 7:13). • Family wishes or religious traditions (Mat 10:37) • Prejudices against the messenger who delivered the truth (Gal. 4:16; John 9:34)

  32. What Does Humbling Ourselves Before God Require? • We must unload the “baggage” so we can really listen to what God says. • We must resolve to let God’s word teach us how to be saved.

  33. Too often we want salvation to be given on our terms, not God’s (e.g., 2 Kings 5:10-14). • God has made His gospel easy to understand and obey! (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38; Rom. 6:4; 1 Pet. 3:21).

  34. What Does Humbling Ourselves Before God Require? • We must unload the “baggage” so we can really listen to what God says. • We must resolve to let God’s word teach us how to be saved. • As Christians, we must continually humble ourselves to God’s counsel.

  35. Proverbs 12:15 (NASB) The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man is he who listens to counsel.

  36. Rather than decide for ourselves what our beliefs or conduct will be, we seek to understand God’s will on everything we do (Eph. 5:15-17).

  37. Ephesians 5:15-17 (NASB) 15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

  38. Humbling Ourselves to God’s Wise Counsel: • The way we think (Phil. 4:8), speak (Eph. 4:29), dress (1 Tim. 2:9), use our bodies (Rom. 12:1), and behave (1 Pet. 1:15). • The sins we must give up (Gal. 5:19-21; 1 Cor. 6:9-10; etc.). • Marriage (Mt 19:1-9; Eph. 5:22-33) & parenting (Eph. 6:4). • The value of spiritual riches over material riches (Mat. 6:19-21; e.g., Mat. 19:21-22). • Worship we offer the Lord (John 4:23-24).

  39. What Does Humbling Ourselves Before God Require? • We must unload the “baggage” so we can really listen to what God says. • We must resolve to let God’s word teach us how to be saved. • As Christians, we must continually humble ourselves to God’s counsel. • When we pray to God for help, we make requests in harmony with His will (1 John 5:14-15).

  40. 1 John 5:14-15 (NASB) 14 And this is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

  41. What Does Humbling Ourselves Before God Require? • An acknowledgement of our need for His mercy (Luke 18:9-14).

  42. Luke 18:13-14 (NASB) 13 "But the tax-gatherer, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, the sinner!' 14 "I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, but he who humbles himself shall be exalted.“ – cf. 1 Jn 1:8, 10

  43. 1 John 1:9 (NASB) If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  44. What Does Humbling Ourselves Before God Require? • An acknowledgement of our need for His mercy (Luke 18:9-14). • Sometimes it requires starting over and rebuilding your faith (Heb. 5:12-14; cf. 2 Pet. 1:12-15)

  45. Hebrews 5:12 (NASB) 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. - cf. 2 Pet. 1:12-15

  46. 2 Peter 1:12 (NASB) Therefore, I shall always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you.

  47. Our Salvation Depends on Our Being Humble before God and His Teachings: “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6)
