    11. Read the assessment instructions carefully The Coventry City story Coventry City football club was established in 1893. Six years later, the club moved to its stadium at Highfield Road in Coventry. At that time, the city of Coventry was much smaller than it is today and the ground occupied a place near the edge of the built-up area of the city. The city grew rapidly in the twentieth century, however, and the area became more congested, and difficult for people to get to and from. Now, the stadium is in a part of the old inner city area (look at Figure 1). In 1968, part of the stadium was destroyed by fire and re-built. In 1981, it became the first stadium in England to be all-seater. Considerable amounts of money had been invested in the stadium, but it was becoming increasingly difficult for the area to cope with the thousands of people travelling to the stadium Coventry fans from the local area, and the fans of visiting teams. The club tried unsuccessfully to redevelop and increase the capacity of one of its stands. Finally, the decision was taken to look for a new home. The site chosen for the new stadium was at Foleshill, on the northern edge of the city by the M6 motorway (look at Figure 1). The new stadium complex is modern and spectacular. It is a joint venture between the city council and the football club, costing 60 million. It has been named The Jaguar Arena.

    12. Figure 1 The location.

    13. Main Features Total cost of 60 million to be met by the city council and the football club. A brownfield site. Situated on a former gas works site. It cost 20 million to clear the polluted site and re-direct gas pipelines for the northern part of Coventry. The stadium is the citys biggest project since the new cathedral was built after the Second World War. The stadium will seat 32,500 people. It is within yards of the M6 motorway. It is only eight miles from Birmingham airport. The project is taking place in a deprived part of the European Union, so the council was able to apply for a grant of 37 million from the EU. A new railway station by the stadium will be capable of handling 10,000 passengers per hour. The complex contains conference and banqueting halls, a huge Tesco superstore and other smaller shops. The whole development is owned by the city council and rented to the users, including Coventry City football club.
