  1. 5 Primary Causes of Sleep Apnea

  2. Sleep Apnea Sleep apnea is an interruption of restful sleep due to paused breathing or extremely shallow breaths. Sleep apnea is a common medical issue and can a pre-cursor to other bigger health concerns. The condition can be categorized into one of two forms: Central Apnea — which occurs when the brain fails to communicate to the body to initiate breathing, and Obstructive Apnea — That results from an actual blockage in the airway.

  3. 1. Slack Muscles in the Throat One of the most common causes of sleep apnea is relaxed or loosened muscles in the back of the individual’s throat. Typically, when an individual is breathing, the throat muscles are taught allowing air to pass through the throat into the lungs; however, when the muscles relax, air is restricted and cannot pass through the airway. loosened muscles

  4. 2. Excess Fat Deposits in Windpipe Obesity is another one of the leading causes of sleep apnea. This condition leads to a buildup of fat deposits the neck, which in turn, causes the windpipe to thicken. These deposits can also confine the tissue in the airway, together making it harder for the air passages to remain open. WIndpipe

  5. 3. Abnormal Nasal Blockage An obstruction or abnormal blockage in the nasal cavity is another primary cause of apnea. Common obstructions include sinus infections, a deviated septum, or fractured nose.

  6. 4. Differentiated Physical Structures An individual’s physical features can actually have a great deal to do with the prevalence of sleep apnea. If one of an individual’s physical features blocks or restricts the air passageways, the result is often paused or shallow breathing.

  7. 5. Gastroesophogeal Reflux Disease (GERD) GERD or acid reflux is a common condition that involves the involuntary regurgitation of acid up into the throat. This condition can cause disruptions in breathing if an individual is unaware of the reflux when sleeping.
