  1. BASIC HOMESCHOOLING MISTAKES PARENTS MAKE AND SHOULD NCESSARILY AVOID

  2. It’s been a year, the global pandemic is still not over yet (but the condition has certainly improved) and parents are struggling to figure out how to navigate through this situation and send their kids to school, weighing their child’s safety as well as education on the same scale.

  3. Left with no physical schooling options available, parents are convinced to engage their kids at home and continue their education through homeschooling.

  4. As easy as it may sound, homeschooling is not a child’s play, especially if you are a first-timer.

  5. In this blog, we are listing a few common mistakes parents make while homeschooling their children. These tips will be helpful for anyone who is giving a thought to teach their children by themselves, irrespective of pandemic.

  6. HIGH EXPECTATIONS When homeschooling their kids for the first time, most parents tend to overestimate their kids’ skills, attention-level and dedication to such an unrealistic level that it builds up undue pressure on their little ones.

  7. Many parents, for instance, get upset when their three-year olds fail to speak or read properly or when their fifth grade child does not excel at Math. Due to unrealistic expectations, parents try to make their kids remember everything, forcing kids to cram without understanding.

  8. SOLUTUION: It’s easy to fall into the trap of unrealistic expectations, but it is advised not to pressurize your kid with such high hopes! Give yourself and your child some time and try to build upon small wins.

  9. ABSENCE OF SCHEDULE Children are used to following a specific schedule in school, so it is important to create a similar routine in the homeschool environment. Often, parents start without a pre-designed schedule in the homeschool setting and teach kids whenever they feel like, eventually missing the whole point of homeschooling.

  10. SOLUTION: Prepare a complete routine including lunch breaks, activity time and TV breaks to help kids manage time. Don’t over-schedule, neither do under-schedule. If over-scheduling is a nightmare, under-scheduling can be just as bad. Find a balance and create a schedule that not only allows kids to study with breaks but also helps you plan and manage your work.

  11. CONFUSING LEARNING WITH OUTPUT Focus on how your child is learning new concepts rather than looking at their paperwork output. This means, do not gauge their achievements with a mere pile of sheets; just because your child is able to finish an entire worksheet doesn’t mean he/she has a clear understanding of the concept.

  12. SOLUTION: Being a parent, you must understand and keep a tab on your child’s learning pattern and make amendments to the schedule accordingly.

  13. UNORGANISED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Another big homeschooling mistake that most parents make is failing to organize a dedicated learning environment. Every child needs proper space and environment that motivates them to invest their time in studying, learning new things and bringing out their creativity. Children may move around during the day but having a dedicated space for learning will help them concentrate and perform better.

  14. SOLUTION: Before going further, start the homeschool with a day dedicated to organizing your kid’s supplies.

  15. IGNORING YOUR CHILD’S INPUT Many parents forget to check with their child about their views on the present set up. Take the desk set up, for instance; when you organize your kid’s desk and school supplies, you do it thinking it would be helpful for them to find everything at one place. Not once, you ask the child how they want their study set up be like.

  16. SOLUTION: Always communicate with your child before planning any schedule and welcome their ideas. Your small gesture of asking would mean so much to them and you never know you might be surprised at what they come up with!

  17. The bottom line is learning how to homeschool your child is a long process which can’t be pulled off overnight. It needs time and patience, from both the sides – parents as well as children. When done right, you will be surprised to learn how incredibly rich and rewarding the homeschooling experience can be for your kids and yourself.

  18. Though the pandemic restrictions have been eased in many places, it is still up to parents whether they want to send their kids to private/preschool in Rockwall/Texas or continue their education through homeschooling. Whatsoever path parents choose, what’s important is learning should never stop.
