    3. Agenda What is a Study Path? Development partner process Banner Study Path Development What comes next? Questions & Discussion

    4. What is a Study Path?

    5. What is a Study Path? In the beginning there was General Student (SGBSTDN) and Programme 1 and Programme 2 Our customer community needed more Well to start with I can help you understand what a Study Path is but to answer the question DO I NEED IT is down to you. From conception the Banner Student module has revolved around the General Student (SGBSTDN) record and its associated Programme 1 and later down the line came Programme 2 as another attribute of the same SGBSTDN table Our customer community needed more flexibility than this, especially in areas which predominantly use the programme based academic model, where multiple programme can be studied at any one time and course registrations and everything that goes with them, such as fees and billing is related to the programme of study rather than a student as a whole. 6. More than 2 Programmes of Study And with Banner 7 came Concurrent Curriculum and SORLCUR with a child relationship to SGBSTDN Provides the ability to have 1, 2, 3, 4 or more Programmes of Study So the solution to this problem has been in the development process for some time With Banner 7 we saw the delivery of Concurrent Curriculum, so that you were now able to apply and study multiple programmes at the same time.So the solution to this problem has been in the development process for some time With Banner 7 we saw the delivery of Concurrent Curriculum, so that you were now able to apply and study multiple programmes at the same time.

    7. Enrolment and Course Registration Enrollment: Need to independently record student status and enrollment for each program. Registration: Need to record how each course is applied to each program at registration, and the applied indicator carried forward to academic history. Grade Roll: Need to respect the application of courses to programs. But that was only the first half of the story, there was still additional requirements to be resolved with Enrolment, Registration and Grade RollsBut that was only the first half of the story, there was still additional requirements to be resolved with Enrolment, Registration and Grade Rolls

    8. Enrolment and Course Registration And with Banner 8.3 comes Study Path SGRSTSP with a child relationship to SGBSTDN and a sibling relationship to SORLCUR Provides the ability to have enrolment and student status for the programme of study Provides the ability to apply a course registration to a Programme of Study and carry that forward to academic history Grade roll process for Study Paths Conversion routine And so was born the Study Path Now through is design and analysis this has been called a number of things Some I couldnt possibly repeat whilst Im been recorded but those I can are Contract Registration and Curriculum Registration We finally settled on Study Path as reasonably widely understood term that didnt have conflicting implications or misinterpretations And so was born the Study Path Now through is design and analysis this has been called a number of things Some I couldnt possibly repeat whilst Im been recorded but those I can are Contract Registration and Curriculum Registration We finally settled on Study Path as reasonably widely understood term that didnt have conflicting implications or misinterpretations

    9. Fees and Billing With Future Releases Fee Assessment: Need to take into account the credit/billing hours associated for each program and also be represented in the audit trails for fee assessment. Billing: Need to apply contracts and exemptions to the fee raised for a particular program and produce a separate statement (invoice) for each program. Progress, GPA and Academic Standing: Need to be recorded for each program. Holds, Leave of Absense, Classification, Class Rules : Need to be recorded for each program. And its not stopping there either, we know this is now 75% of the way and we are currently going through a prioritisation for the following phases. I wont go into much detail around the next phases today as we want to concentrate on the core concepts around study paths and what will be in this first release. And its not stopping there either, we know this is now 75% of the way and we are currently going through a prioritisation for the following phases. 10. Development partner process Before I go into the actual development I first like to explain a little about how we have designed and built the product with the help of our Development PartnersBefore I go into the actual development I first like to explain a little about how we have designed and built the product with the help of our Development Partners

    11. Program goals for collaborative development Engage a diverse group of customers Australian, Canadian, United Kingdom, United States Cross section of institution type Small, mid-size and large enrollments Help refine the release of Banner Study Path Registration Assist in refinement and validation of requirements Assist in prioritization of features and function Assist in development and UI design and review To ensure we got this right and provide the best development we could we engaged with a group of development parnters. This is our general approach to the majority of developments we have produced in the last few years and it goes in line with our Agile Development methodolgy. Engage a diverse group of customers from those regions that had expressed the greatest interest in this development 3 Australian 1 Canadian 2 United Kingdom 2 United States Also tried to get representation from a good cross section of institution type Small, mid-size and large enrollments Private, public, community college, etc. Help refine the release of Banner Study Path Registration Assist in refinement and validation of requirements Assist in prioritization of features and function Assist in development and UI design and review To ensure we got this right and provide the best development we could we engaged with a group of development parnters. 14. How we will break this section down Control of Study Paths The Study Path record and its creation Registration using Study Paths Grade Roll Academic History Cohorts and Attributes Ill break down the main topic for today in these 6 areas Control of Study Paths The system settings that govern how Study paths is used or not as the case maybe The Study Path record and its creation How the study path record fits into Banner Student and what triggers its creation Registration using Study Paths The registration process Grade Roll The Grade roll process Academic History How this associates to academic history Cohorts and Attributes and how cohorts and attributes can be associated to a study path.Ill break down the main topic for today in these 6 areas Control of Study Paths The system settings that govern how Study paths is used or not as the case maybe The Study Path record and its creation How the study path record fits into Banner Student and what triggers its creation Registration using Study Paths The registration process Grade Roll The Grade roll process Academic History How this associates to academic history Cohorts and Attributes and how cohorts and attributes can be associated to a study path.

    15. Enable study paths at the institution level On the Curriculum Rules Control form SAOCTRL you can use the STUDY PATH Indicator to turn study path creation on at the institution level. 16. Define which components will make up the name of the study path The Study Path Tab on the same form defines which components will make up the name or description of the study path. This will provide meaning to the value of the study path so that students and faculty can identify the study path. 17. Control if study paths are created for the specific curriculum At a more detailed level weve added a new column to control if study paths are created for the specific curriculum If the SOBCTRL_STUDY_PATH_IND is Y this code is evaluated. If the value is Y, and the SOBCTRL_STUDY_PATH_CDE is Y, the study path will be created. If the value is N, and the SOBCTRL_STUDY_PATH_CDE is Y, the study path will be not be created. 18. New validation table to house the study path status code And finally for this section we have the new validation table to house the study path status code And finally for this section we have the new validation table to house the study path status code

    19. The Study Path Record This is a child table off the General Student SGBSTDN table. Its key is the PIDM, Effective term and a sequence number. The learner curriculum will inherit the study path sequence number instead of having a sequence of 99. This is how the study path and curriculum are tied Student Study Path. 21. Study paths will allow for separate maintenance of the study path academic standing and progress information and the miscellaneous fields. Since these never resided in the LCUR curriculum record, they can now be tracked with the study path, separately from the overall SGBSTDN data. We will not have duplicates of the fields previously maintainable on the LCUR records. These will continue to be updated on the curriculum record itself, as they are all accessible to fee assessment from that record and will retain the non-destructive update feature then. Since the study path is a sibling of the curriculum, that data is still part of the study path. (graduation dates, student type, site, leave of absence, .). 22. The Study Path Record The curriculum and the study path are sibling records. But, the specific curriculum that generates the study path can change it may not be in place for the continual life of the study path record. A curriculum may become non-current or inactive leaving the study path without a current and active curriculum. Thus, if the curricula are made inactive or not current, the study path will need to be made inactive manually by changing the study path status. So as mentioned before The study path key is the key sequence assigned to this record and is reflected on the curriculum. The curriculum and the study path are sibling records. The curriculum is a requirement to the creation of the study path, But, the specific curriculum that generates the study path can change i.e. it may not be in place for the continual life of the study path record. A curriculum may be come non-current or inactive leaving the study path without a current and active curriculum. The purpose of the study path record is to house the enrollment eligibility to the curriculum. Thus, if the curricula are made inactive or not current, the study path will need to be made inactive manually by changing the study path status. 23. The Study Path Record Study paths are created when: SOACTRL indicator enable study path = Y Curriculum is valid on SOACURR and indicator study path = Y Curriculum is not valid on SOACURR Study Path is NOT created if SOACTRL indicator enable study path = N OR Curriculum is valid on SOACURR, and enable study path indicator on SOACTRL = Y BUT on SOACURR, the study path indicator = N

    24. The Study Path Record Given that the indicators on SOACTRL and SOACURR are set to create study paths, the study path is always created by: the application decision SAADCRV OR from the quick admit process (QuickStart or SAAQUIK). OR via the insertion of a new learner curriculum (sfaregs, sgastdn)

    25. The Study Path Users cannot delete the study path if there is a degree sequence with the study path sequence they must leave at least one occurrence of the study path Users cannot delete the study path if there are CRNs with the same study path sequence and >= effective term Deletion of the study path will result in deletion of the curriculum for that term. Cannot delete the study path if it will result in deleting the remaining current and active curriculum for the learner Deletion of the learner record will delete the study path when the curriculum is deleted Users cannot delete the study path if there is a degree sequence with the study path sequence they must leave at least one occurrence of the study path Users cannot delete the study path if there are CRNs with the same study path sequence and >= effective term Deletion of the study path will result in deletion of the curriculum for that term. 26. Student Course Registration SFAREGS Well now move on to registration The study path must be selected in the key-block for enrollment and registration to occur for the Study Path. The CRNs for the key block study path will be sorted first, followed by other CRNs for other study paths or that are unassigned. Block registration for the study path is allowed based on the study path block. The overall block registration cannot be used if a study path is entered in the key-block. 30. Grade Roll with Study Paths Next well take a quick look at the grade roll process, were we want to ensure that the courses associated with a study path are rolled to the associated degree sequence This is controlled by the SHACTRL form if the user checks Roll by study path, it will uncheck all the other Roll by fields. The user can only check the roll by major, college, level, program, degree if the roll by study paths is unchecked so it cant select Primary Major or degreeNext well take a quick look at the grade roll process, were we want to ensure that the courses associated with a study path are rolled to the associated degree sequence This is controlled by the SHACTRL form if the user checks Roll by study path, it will uncheck all the other Roll by fields.
