  1. Good Turkey Hunting Requires Proper Preparation Every hunter, much like with any activity where knowledge and skill are required, knows that without good preparation they may as well not start out. This is true for the deer hunter: does he/she have a good rifle, the knowledge of what to look out for in the field and how to aim properly so they do not miss? The same is true for the wing-shooter and the wild turkey hunter. In the South, at good lodges in and around Alabama, for example, great opportunities exist for all of these activities, and the hunter and shooter that comes well prepared is often rewarded handsomely. Turkey hunting, for example, is the passion of a sizeable group of hunters that look forward to turkey hunting season every year. They are also offered the chance to attend turkey hunting school, an important part of the preparation referred to above. Not many of these schools exist throughout the South, but there are those that are mentioned for being the best introduction for a new turkey hunter - and the more experienced – so they are well prepared when they set out. Among these is the well-known turkey hunting school at Alabama’s Westervelt Lodge. Such schools have prepared many a turkey hunter for some of the best experiences of their lives. What, then, does one expect to be taught at these schools? Of course you want to attend a facility that offers good accommodations during the time that you visit, you want hands-on instruction to be guaranteed, guides to show you the finer points and all that there is to know about a turkey hunting trip. Wild turkey in Alabama is generally what is known as the Eastern wild turkey, the so-called meleagris gallopavo silvestris, which is found in hardwood and mixed forestlands which are interspersed with area of open space. Turkeys are known for their very distinguishable sounds such as gobbling, which helps the hunter to locate them in dense areas. This sound can best be described as a loud sound that reminds of gurgling – made by males. Hunters use this sound to imitate the bird, thereby hoping to attract their attention. Also, some hunters use the female’s yelp, which may attract the attention of the male to come to where you are. Turkey calls form an important part of finding turkeys and are generally accepted to be one of the following: the gobble; the turkey cluck; the yelp; the cut and the purr. All of these have their own meanings and are used to great effect to help locate those gobblers the hunter is after. These are taught at turkey hunting school, how and when to use them (and when not) to assist you. At turkey school attendees are taught a great deal to assist them so they come well prepared, also issues related to when (and when not) you are allowed to shoot, i.e. the time of day, the season and the like. You are taught about bag limits. You will be taught the very important aspects of safety for yourself and other hunters in the group, you will be taught, too, about what the best ways are to conceal yourself from the turkeys since they have great eyesight. Therefore you will want to wear good camouflage, you will be taught to keep your hands and face covered lest the turkey spots any movement not camouflaged. You will be taught that bright colors are out, colors such as red, blue, white or black. Your instructor will also include information about patterning your shotgun for the turkey hunt. All of the above form part of the preparation for a wild turkey hunt in the Southeast, in a state such as A\Alabama. At a good turkey hunting school you can expect to receive both theoretical and practical instruction. Make a trip to hunting school part of your preparation; it may well be worth the money.
