  1. Digital Signature Certificate for GST Digital Signature Certificate acts as a substitute for handwritten signatures which are used to file GST. A company can get registered under GST only by verifying its GST application through a digital signature. A digital signature is used in validating the authenticity and integrity of a message, software or a digital document by making use of mathematical techniques. It uses 2 keys that are mathematically linked: public and private key. The digital information can only be accessed when these two keys match. What is GST? Goods and Services Tax is an indirect tax used in India on supply of goods and services. GST was introduced in order to remove all other indirect taxes(VAT, excise, service tax) and replace them with a single comprehensive tax. For GST enrollment, a Class 2 or Class 3 DSC is necessary for filing GST. How is DSC used for GST return? The GST Common Portal allows businesses to designate employees as authorized signatories, which enables them to sign and file returns on behalf of the business, as well as to make payments online. Any person registered on the Authorized Person tab of the GST Common Portal for an enterprise can sign and file GSTR on behalf of that enterprise, using digital signature certificates (DSC).

  2. A DSC replaces a hand-written signature and is mandatory for companies and Limited Liability Partnership (LLPs), and optional for other taxpayers to sign and file returns in the GST Common Portal. For this purpose either a Class 2 or a Class 3 digital signature certificate is required which comes with 1, 2 and 3 year validity.
