  2. Hello! This is Oscar HIjuelos Born on August 24, 1951 In New York City

  3. The History Hijuelos is often known as a Cuban American writer while he was actually born in the United States. His story begins with his parents: Pascual and and Magdalena who moved to New York in early 1940’s Before Castro was is control. Mesmerized by his experiences in New York, Pascual invited his brother, Oscar Hijuelos, to United States.. However, Oscar died before he could come to New York. Hence, Oscar Jerome Hijuelos was named after his uncle as a sign of Pascual’s love for his brother.

  4. 1. The trip to Cuba When he was about three years old Hijuelos had to the opportunity to visit his family that lived in Cuba.

  5. Cuba the Wonderland As a child visiting Cuba, Hijuelos thought the country was almost magical. He thought the country was a fairy land full of spirit and vibrance. He experienced cuban music, food and tales about his parents.

The Disease • During his stay in Cuba, Hijuelos contracted a Nephritis, a kidney disease. • His symptoms went unnoticed for a long time, finally when his family found out the severity of his condition he was sent to St. Luke’s convalescent hospital in Connecticut. • The one year stay in the hospital made him lose his culture and his language

  9. His Inspiration for the setting, character, character background and storyline comes from his thirst to learn more about the Cuban culture. In all his books, his protagonists are individuals who try to reconnect with their motherland and culture. Throughout his life, he tried to learn more about the Cuban Culture by his works.   10. Other Inspirations The city life The Cuban community is the city was very vibrant. Hijuelos’s parents often held parties in his house during the weekd which had Cubanfood, music and dance. 03 Mother Hijuelos mother grew up visitign Europs in her childhood, experiencing all frms of arts which include painting, drama, opera and other art forms. She herself was a poet. . Father Hijuelos’s father grew up in a family of arts enthusiats. Hijuelos Senior often held gathering in his home that showcased works of many arts. 02 01

  12. Why is his writing significant? Oscar Hijuelos was the First Latin American writer to win a Pulitzer Prize. His writing is relatable to all Cuban-American because he addresses a social disconnect in his works Hijuelos writes from the heart and gives the reader a taste of his nostalgia. His writing is almost soul touching and reminiscent.

  13. Hijuelos went to a CUNY college, City College of New York. It was during his time in college that he discovered his inner writer. He grew up in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan. He went to and graduated from Louis D. Brandeis High School in the New York City. Some Interesting Facts
