  2. Life of George Gershwin George Gershwin was a American composer, he was born in September 26, 1898 and died in July 11, 1937. He did a lot of good projects but he is most known works are the orchestral compositions Rhapsody in Blue (1924) and An American in Paris (1928), as well as the opera, Porgy and Bess (1935).

  3. Parents and family His parents were Jews from Odessa. His father, Morris (Moishe) Gershowitz and his mother name was Rosa Bruskin. She came from Russia and later married Morris. George Gershwin was the second child of the four that was born in the Gershowitz family. After he became a professional musician he changed the family name.

  4. Musical interests and influences… Gershwin was influenced by French composers of the early twentieth century named Maurice Ravel. Gershwin made a number of solo piano recordings of tunes from his musicals, some including the vocals of Fred, as well as his Three Preludes for piano.

  5. George and His brother In 1924, George collaborated with his brother, lyricist Ira Gershwin, on a musical comedy “Lady Be Good”. It included such standards as “Rhythm” and “The Man I Love.” It was the beginning of a partnership that would continue for the rest of the composer’s life. Together they wrote many more successful musicals including “Oh Kay!” and “Funny Face”,

  6. Gershwin Fox Films In 1929, Gershwin was contracted by Fox Film Corporation to compose the score for the movie Delicious. Only two pieces were used in the final film, the five-minute "Dream Sequence" and the six-minute "Manhattan ". Gershwin became infuriated when the rest of the score was rejected by Fox Film Corporation, and it would be seven years before he worked in Hollywood again.

  7. In 1937, after many successes on Broadway, the brothers decided go to Hollywood. Again they teamed up with Fred Astaire, who was now paired with Ginger Rogers. They made the musical film, “Shall We Dance”, which included such hits as “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” and “They Can’t Take That Away From Me.”

  8. Gershwin down fall January 1937, Gershwin performed in a special concert of his music with the san Francisco symphony under the direction of French maestro Pierre Monteux. Gershwin suffered "musical blackouts" during his final performances. It was in Hollywood and that’s where he collapsed.

  9. George Death He planned on doing many other things like, a ballet and another opera, but these pieces were never written. At the age of 38, he died of a brain tumor. Today he remains one of America’s most beloved popular musicians.

  10. Gershwin Honors In Brooklyn, George Gershwin Junior High School 166 is named after him. The Gershwin Theatre on Broadway is named after George and Ira Gershwin had very good music and was a great performer. His legacy will live on forever.
