  1. Fairy Tale Notes Seventh Grade

  2. Definitions • Fairy Tale: a short story that typically includes magic or enchantment and includes fantasy characters (fairies, goblins, elves, mermaids, trolls, dwarves, giants) with the everyman hero - often contains a hidden lesson or moral which can be dark

  3. Examples • The Little Mermaid - magical characters: mermaid, sea witch - enchantment: transforms from human to mermaid - lesson: don’t change yourself to become some impossible ideal

  4. Examples • Rumplestiltskin - magical characters: magical troll or gnome - magic: can spin straw into gold - lesson: Don’t commit yourself to promises you cannot keep.

  5. Examples • Little Red Riding Hood - magic: a wolf disguises itself as a grandmother - everyman hero: the Woodcutter saves Little Red Riding Hood and the Grandmother from the wolf - lesson: trust your intuition

  6. Examples • The Frog King - magical creatures: enchanted frog - magic: Frog will become a king when he receives a kiss. - lesson: Judge inner beauty rather than outer appearance.

  7. Practice Example • Beauty and the Beast - magic/enchantment? - magical characters? - lesson?

  8. Definitions • Myths: a narrative that is epic in scale and includes gods, supernatural heroes, and humans - is considered a true story that deals with ethical dilemmas or creationism (of the world, of objects, of taboos)

  9. Example • Greek myths • Roman myths • Egyptian myths • Watch Hercules: The Legendary Journey Clip (3:43 – 4:43)

  11. Definitions • Fables: a short fictional story, in prose or verse, that features animals, mythical creatures, inanimate objects, or forces of nature that are anthropomorphized - Anthropomorphism: giving human qualities to nonhuman things - Includes a direct moral lesson

  12. Examples • The Tortoise and the Hare - anthropomorphism: tortoise and the hare can talk - moral: Plodding (slow and steady) wins the race.

  13. Practice Example The Dog and Its Shadow It happened that a Dog had got a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace. Now on his way home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook. As he crossed, he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water beneath. Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat, he made up his mind to have that also. So he made a snap at the shadow in the water, but as he opened his mouth the piece of meat fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen more.

  16. Royalty • Some element of nobility - want to rise to nobility - mocking nobility

  17. Good vs. Evil • Have a character that represents good and one that represents evil - rarely are there shades of gray with these characters

  18. Magic or Enchantment/ Fantasy Characters • Something not seen in reality - spell - a living gingerbread man - curse - a magic mirror - talking animals - warlock - superhuman heroes - dwarfs

  19. Problem or Conflict • Hero has to overcome or defeat something

  20. Lesson or Theme • Can be hidden (reader has to figure it out) • Can be said directly (at the end of the story) • Come up with this early on or first!

  22. Things to Keep In Mind • If you choose to model specifically after a fable, although they are by definition short, you need to make sure you fulfill the page requirement. • This is a creative piece. While it is acceptable to borrow ideas, you CANNOT copy the exact same story.
