  1. Making the Connection Literally and Neurologically:The Role of the Hippocampus in Middle School Students Acquiring and Retaining New Vocabulary Ms. Ketia C. Stokes, Presenter Coppin State University REED 504 Dr. Delores Harvey, Professor

  2. Principle 2 Learning & Development Understanding of how children learn and develop; can provide learning opportunities that support their intellectual development Principle 3 Differentiated Response Instruction Understanding of how students differ in their approaches to learning and creates instructional opportunities that are adapted to diverse learners. Principle 6 Communication for Instruction Uses knowledge of effective verbal,- nonverbal, and media communication techniques to foster active interaction in the classroom. Principle 7 Instructional Planning Plans instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, students, the community and curriculum goals. INTASC PRINCIPLES

  3. IRA STANDARDS • Standard 1- Foundational Knowledge • Standard 2- Instructional Strategies and Curriculum Materials • Standard 3- Assessment Diagnosis & Evaluation International Reading Association : Home

  4. Vocabulary Volcano

  5. Hypothesis: Teacher’s can manipulate the brain’s strength in recalling information by understanding how, when and in what manner the brain encodes semantic information using the hippocampus by presenting information in small chunks and word associations

  6. Cognitive Neuroscience & Education • Study how the structure and function of brain affects behavior • Understanding what shapes our learning experiences • Determines what information will be forgotten or retained • Conceptualize common sense approaches to education

  7. Hippocampus • Resides in Temporal Lobe in both hemispheres • Temporarily receives incoming information • Determines what information is significant enough to route to the necessary structure of the brain Memory Aide: Seahorse & Call Center

  8. Hippocampus • Working memory capacity of 3-7 items • Information held for 5- 30 seconds in frontal lobe unless processed by hippocampus • First 15 minutes of a lecture is critical to retention

  9. Hippocampus Delivery • Synapses: Delivery System • Synapses transfer information between neurons until desired area of brain is reached • Hippocampus rests during synapse firing • Rest allows neural firings to occur without interruption and strengthens connectivity • Hippocampus is bias to selecting for delivery previously made connections

  10. Less is always more Present smaller pieces of information in small intervals of time Present important information first Strategically plan lessons Allow for breaks throughout instruction Have a thorough understanding of the skill Teaching Implications

  11. Vocabulary Instruction To strengthen neural connections for acquisition and retention: • Present vocabulary words in categories • Associate vocabulary words orally, visually or dramatically • Present 1-2 categories over time with periodic revisiting

  12. Semantic Memory & Hippocampus:Questions to Ponder Are there circumstances under which the hippocampus can be trained to retain more information or process information quicker?

  13. Questions to Ponder: Does low retention have more to do with the ambitious nature of curriculums or poor the poor quality of teaching? Teaching Is…… Intentional Data-Driven Proactive
