Scar will always be there where body tries to heal the wound but the characteristic of scar depends on what type of wound it is and its management, therefore good wound care by specialist is of prime importance in getting a good scar and meticulous surgical wound closure will help achieving a fine thin line scar. Scar revision surgery helps to improve the scar appearance both physically and functionally to regainconfidence. Scar RemovingProcedures Scar management can be done both surgically and non-surgically depending on type of scar. Consultation with your doctor is must for deciding which procedure is best foryou. Here are some possibleoptions: Silicone GelSheets Silicone gel sheets are thin soft malleable sheets which are directly placed of scars. The silicone in these sheet helps flattening of hypertrophic and keloid scars to some extent, however the duration of treatment is 4-6months. Scar Gels There are Silicone gels which are also available and can be applied but they do not provide compressive force as compared to silicone gelsheets. Dermabrasion This procedure helps in smoothening out surface irregularities such as deep lines or scars by removing the top most layers of the skin. The resultant raw area can be left alone for natural healing or can be skingrafted. Laser Skin Resurfacing Fractional CO2 laser is commonly used for resurfacing scars. This laser removes the topmost layers of skin, allowing new, smooth skin toform. Skin Grafts In this procedure, skin from other part of the body and is placed over the injured area. Tissue Expansion This procedure involves inserting a small balloon under the healthy skin adjacent to a scarred area. The balloon is gradually filled with a saline solution either weekly or bi weekly, to stretch the adjacent normal skin. After the skin has been adequately stretched, which may take up to 6 to 8 weeks, the balloon is then removed. The scar is then surgically removed, and the stretched normal texture skin is advanced over the scarred area and carefullyclosed. Z-Plasty Z-Plasty is a technique which is used to realign the scar in a more anatomical position parallel to the natural skin creases. This utilizes the surrounding laxity of skin to give new improved direction to scar for better healing. The new scar is thin and less noticeable. Z-plasty can also be used in releasing contractures of skin after post burn and or post traumaticscars.
