The First Persian War in Review The war starts because Greeks on the mainland help Greeks in Ionia in Asia Minor revolt against the Persians. • The first war is fought by the Persian King Darius. • Battle of Marathon:the Athenians destroy the Persian army as it lands from the sea. 192 Athenians die compared to 6,400 Persians (200,000 Persians according to Herodotus) • Phiedippides runs 26 miles to Athens to celebrate the victory and yells “NIKE”, then dies= the marathon race gets its name from this battle Darius Xerxes

  16. To Athens • Persians burn city of Athens to the ground, but the Athenians are gone, thanks to the Spartans that held them off long enough.

Second Persian War in Review Xerxes, the son of Darius, vows to conquer Greece and avenge his father’s loss. • Battle of Thermopylae- 300 Spartans and other Greeks defend the small pass and hold off the invasion of the Persians. • Xerxes will capture Athens and burn the city, but the Athenians flee to the island of Salamis. • Battle of Salamis-a naval battle in which the Athenians trick Xerxes into the small strait and use their smaller and faster ships to kill thousands of Persians • Battle of Plataea- the Greeks defeat the last Persian army left by Xerxes in Greece Xerxes

  22. Delian League • With the defeat of the Persians, many of the remaining Greek City States decide to create a defense league “JUST IN CASE” the Persians decide to return. • Headed by Athens, but all others pay into it.

  23. Learning Goals Revisited • The students will learn the causes of the Persian Wars. The Main Cause of the Persian War was the Ionian Revolt. Greeks living in Asia Minor disliked Persian governors who were tyrants, Paying taxes to the Persian government and being forced to serve in the Persian military. • The students will be able to describe the major phases of the Persian Wars. Major phases of the Persian Was were the battles of Marathon, Thermopylae, and Salamis.

Last Learning Goal • The students will learn the impact the Persian Wars had on the future of Greece. • Working together to defeat a common foe reminded the Greek city-states that they shared a common language, culture and religion. • Residents of other Greek city-states referred to themselves collectively as “Greeks.” • Victory over the mighty Persian Empire filled the Greeks with a new level of confidence. • Athenians were determined to rebuild their city and make it one of the most spectacular in the ancient word. • Democracy survived the Persian Threat. • Achievements of Athenians in theater, philosophy, sculpture, architecture and government led to the period known as the “Golden Age” of Athens.
