  2. Great Depression The economic crisis in the United States beginning with the stock market crash of 1929 and continuing into the 1930’s. Many people were without work, homeless, and lost almost everything they owned.

  3. Herbert Hoover Herbert Hoover was elected president in 1928- a year before the stock market crash that began the Great Depression. After the stock market crash, he felt the worst was over but was mistaken. Because of his thinking , the government did little to help its citizens from 1929-1933.

  4. Hooverville A shanty town built by homeless people during the Great Depression.

  5. Franklin Delano Roosevelt President elected in 1932 after serving as governor of New York. He tried to bring back American’s confidence in their country. During the Great Depression, he spoke on the radio to explain his plans for the country. The radio talks became known as “Fireside Chats.” He was president from 1933-1945.

  6. Dust Bowl The greatest farm disaster in the United States. The Dust Bowl began in 1931. It was caused by a long period of dry weather and overused land on the Great Plains. . Because of overgrazing, over farming, and a drought, there was nothing to hold soil in place. The wind began to blow the loose soil. Dust was everywhere!

  7. Auction-public sale of property to the highest bidder.

  8. Newsie- The old newsies were tough kids, hollering and fighting their way to dominate a street corner to sell newspapers. They worked long hours and many of them were homeless boys.

  9. Hobo- homeless worker moving from place to place to find a job
