  2. In the United States • Alcohol is responsible for 38% of traffic deaths. • Drugs other than alcohol for 18% of traffic deaths

  3. Problem with drugged driving enforcement • Testing by blood sample • There is no per se limit • There are thousands of legal and illegal drugs • There are seizure laws complication the issue with drugs

  4. Refusal • Police can now get search warrants for a blood test after a refusal when someone is injured in an accident

  5. Part of our Society • There is a widespread belief that medicine/drug can solve anything • Most people take some form of drug on a regular basis • Drug addictions “ It can’t happen to me”

  6. Effects of taken One Drug • Therapeutic effect • Side effect • Residual effect • Remember you could be charged for DWI for taken an over the counter drug. Before getting in your vehicle, KNOW the effects the medication has on you.

  7. Drug Combination • Additive effect- you get both effects • Antagonistic effect- one drug cancels or counteract another • Synergistic effect- the resulting interaction is greater than the sum of the parts

  8. Three classes of Drugs • Depressants- alcohol, barbiturates, tranquilizers, narcotics, codeine, morphine • Stimulants- amphetamines, cocaine • Hallucinogens- LSD, PCB, STP as well as marijuana

  9. Marijuana • Although many consider marijuana as a depressant and would prefer it reclassified. The medical profession still lists it as a hallucinogen

  10. Drugs and Driving • Before operating a vehicle, make sure you are fit to drive • All drugs, legal and illegal, may have serious effects on anyone’s ability to drive.
