  1. Lord of the Flies

  2. Background Information • Golding was born in 1911 in Cornwall, England • His father was a science teacher and a socialist with a strong commitment to scientific rationalism • In 1930, Golding attended Oxford University where he studied Natural Sciences before English Literature.

  3. Background Information • During World War II, Golding fought in the Royal Navy. • He participated in the Normandy invasion, commanding a rocket ship. • He believed the horrors of WWII were based on “innate evil” inside of mankind, a subject he explores in LOTF.

  4. Story Background • Golding was horrified by what he saw in WWII and sought to use the adventure story as a vehicle for expressing his view that the story was “an attempt to trace the defects of society back to the defects of human nature”.

  5. Story Background • SETTING – A deserted island during WWII – used less for mood and more to allow Golding to comment on society. • Isolation of island and lack of society, laws and rules allows the boys to reveal their human nature, their true ugly, inner selves.

  6. ALLEGORY - A narrative having a second meaning beneath the surface one - a story with two meanings, a literal meaning and a symbolic meaning. An expressive style that uses fictional characters and events to describe some subject by suggestive resemblances . LITERARY DEVICES

  7. LOTF as Political Allegory – At the end of World War II, The world was divided into two camps - the free world and the Soviet Union - much like the camps of Ralph and Jack.  The postwar Cold War Era suffered from fears of atomic destruction.  Lord of the Flies shows the world at the brink of atomic destruction.  The novel serves as a warning to the leaders of the world. LITERARY DEVICES

  8. LOTF as Political Allegory • The Cold War brought about fears of atomic destruction – those of which were materialized in LOTF.

  9. LOTF as Political Allegory • Ralph represents fair and democratic government. He tries to achieve unity between the boys on the Island and tries to find balance between the opposing forces of the boys. • Jack represents a dictatorship full of one individual’s tyrannical wants. He has the desire to get power and hunt . He puts his own needs above the needs of other people. • Piggy represents technology and intellectual rule. • Simon represents socialism or humanism, political affiliations aimed at working fairly and honestly for all people.
