Objectives • Pharmacy e-HIT Collaborative overview • Explain the Roadmap development and review process • Describe an overview of the goals, objectives and strategies of the Roadmap • Describe how pharmacists can get involved in ensuring the goals of the Roadmap are met • Describe how the Roadmap outlines the adoption of electronic health records (EHR) by pharmacists to facilitate safe and effective medication use

  4. Advisory Work Group • Each Collaborative Council organization appointed representatives to work on the Roadmap • Over 50 authors, contributors and advisors worked on the Roadmap • Roadmap was reviewed by over 100 key health care individuals and organizations

About the Roadmap • Goals are numbered by process and not by priority • The Collaborative will contribute to aspects within the Roadmap that are aligned with the scope, goals, objectives, and strategies of the Collaborative • Areas outside the scope of the Collaborative will be addressed by pharmacy organizations

Roadmap Goals • Ensure HIT Supports Pharmacists in Health Care Service Delivery-is to ensure that HIT enables pharmacists to improve public health through the safe, effective and appropriate medication use • Achieve Integration of Clinical Data with Electronic Prescription (e-prescribing) Information-is to foster forums that evaluate e-prescribing system safety, effectiveness, vulnerabilities, and opportunities for improvement

Roadmap Goals • Advocate Pharmacist Recognition in Existing Programs and Policies- is to promote pharmacist involvement in the health care delivery model in all practice settings in both state and national HIT policies and programs designed to expand the adoption and use the Pharmacist EHR • Ensure HIT Infrastructure Includes and Supports MTM Services - is to ensure that MTM principles and service models are incorporated into the national HIT infrastructure and that HIT systems support the pharmacist’s role in providing MTM

Roadmap Goals • Integrate Pharmacist-Delivered Immunizations into the EHR- is to ensure that the pharmacist’s meaningful use (MU) of the EHR includes pharmacist-administered immunizations and that this information is shared with other providers and public health organizations • Achieve Recognition of Pharmacists as Meaningful Users of EHR Quality Measures- is to promote the recognition of pharmacists as meaningful users of the EHR and as having impact on the MU quality measures of other eligible professionals and hospitals

Roadmap Goals • Advance System Vendor EHR Certification- is to establish recognition and approval of the Pharmacist EHR certification criteria and selection of a certification body to drive Pharmacist EHR certification beyond e-prescribing functionality • Promote Pharmacist Adoption and Use of HIT and EHRs- is to support pharmacists’ adoption of HIT and certified Pharmacist EHRs, including participation in HIEs for bidirectional exchange of medical information

Roadmap Goals • Achieve Integration of Pharmacies and Pharmacists into Health Information Exchanges- is to include pharmacy and pharmacist-provided services in HIEs by providing and receiving key clinical and medication information • Establish the Value and Effective Use of HIT Solutions by Pharmacists- is to establish the value of the pharmacist’s role in HIT by demonstrating the effective use of HIT by pharmacists

Immediate Priorities • Steps to ensure optimal integration of pharmacist-provided patient care services into the national HIT inter-operative framework • 4 basic steps, critical for the pharmacy profession’s success in the national HIT plan • Promote the “Roadmap for Pharmacy HIT” agenda to stakeholders, change-agents, and policymakers • Engage stakeholders within and outside the pharmacy sector • Participate in national, regional, state, local, and private HIE initiatives and agendas • Educate pharmacist stakeholders to help assess and accelerate the Pharmacist EHR adoption by pharmacists

  13. Objectives & Strategies • Roadmap details 2011– 2015 Pharmacy HIT objectives and strategies for each of the 10 goals • Rationale – background for each goal • Objectives • 2011 • 2012-2013 • 2013-2015 • Strategies identified as necessary for moving objectives forward

Next Steps • A survey will be done to rank and prioritize the 10 goals • Convene a focus group centered around the top 3 goals • Work on action plans to achieve the objectives and strategies outlined in the Roadmap • Collaborative will begin to work on the objectives and strategies that fall under the Collaborative’s scope

  15. Get Involved! • Discuss adoption of Pharmacist EHR functionality with pharmacy management system vendors • Get involved in State HIEs • Take an inter-professional team approach to EHR adoption in all practice settings • Participate in HIT initiatives with professional associations
