Careers versus “The Job” • Jobs pay the bills. • Job synonyms: work, employment, your position • Career synonyms: occupation, profession, your calling. • As you build a career in science or any other discipline you will have many jobs, a.k.a. work experiences. • Jobs should also facilitate your career strategy. • Good jobs will provide opportunities for you to learn new skills. • Good jobs will challenge you so to increase your disciplinary knowledge base and experience. • You should set career goals. Keep these goals in mind when considering jobs and when determining whether to stay at a job or move on.

  3. Career Planning Starts Now! • Now what courses and GPA you will need. • Review programs early (sophomore year) • Be open minded about all subdisciplines. • Get engaged in science outside of coursework • Undergraduate research opportunities • Internship programs (research – industry - professional) • Demonstrate interest (clubs and Sci.Tech. Seminars) • Tutor in the Learning Center • References (typically three minimum) • Take any entrance exams early (junior year) • Have a “Back-up Plan”!

Searching for Science Jobs(Assignment; Due November 9th) • Determine jobs available in your area of scientific interest – requires a disciplinary focus. • Find different educational / research requirements. • Find diverse employment sectors (private, government, academic). • Try diverse sources for postings (see web links) • Minimum of 5 job descriptions with educational / experience qualifications (salary if available). • Print the announcement and give its source. • Due next week and be ready to discuss your finds.
