  2. What is adaptation to climate change? Diverse definitions: “Adaptation refers to adjustments in ecological, social, or economic systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli and their effects or impacts. It refers to changes in processes, practices, and structures to moderate potential damages or to benefit from opportunities associated with climate change” (UNFCCC, 2013) Different spatial levels (individual, household, community, state, global) Different timeframes – planned or autonomous Terminology and definitions

Migration as adaptation to climate change • Pastoralists use migration/mobility to adapt to climate change, but adaptive migration is a muchbroadertheme • IOM considersthat migration or mobilitycanrepresent an important adaptation stratgey for diverse groups and in diverse ways, for example: • Temporary labour migration • Remittances

  4. Importance of pastoralism to the region The example of Kenya: • In Kenya, the ASALs constitute about 80% of the total land mass • Pastoralists in the ASALs own about 70% of the national livestock population with an estimated value of close to USD 1 billion. • Pastoralism provides direct employment and livelihood to over three million Kenyans. • Pastoralism has a low environmental impact compared to other land-uses in ASAL areas
