Three-Person Membership Committee Committee Goals: • Ensure an appropriate emphasis is placed on all four vital aspects of club operation, membership, leadership, retention and extension • Within the club, reinforce the importance of membership responsibilities • Encourage ongoing communication about membership issues with the club’s board of directors • Give continuity to the committee’s efforts • Provide a direct link from your club to the district and multiple district membership teams

  9. Three-Person Membership Committee The members work together, as a team, to reach their committee goals. Each member is elected for a three year rotating term, with the senior member retiring and a new freshman member being elected each year.

Membership “Within the three-person membership committee, what is the role of the first-year member?” • First-year member: • Focuses on increasing club membership • Freshman member of the committee with three years remaining • Becomes familiar with the club’s membership in preparation of subsequent positions • Collaborates with the club and the other committee members on membership projects

  14. Motivating members to create recruitment goals • Work within the club to motivate members to create recruitment goals of their own. • Every individual Lion is a representative of the organization and can contribute to increasing membership.

  15. Coordinating and conducting club membership workshops • Workshops prepare club members to recruit new members • Workshops bring club members together and can increase group cohesiveness from sharing ideas about Lions Clubs International and the benefits of being a member.

  16. Communicating regularly with the board of directors • It is imperative for both the board of directors and the members to be aware of club information and activities.

  17. Working with previous club membership chairpersons on program development • Past membership chairpersons have experience and knowledge regarding membership and can be great resources.

  18. A sponsor night or open house event is a great event for the first year member to conduct to gain experience working with the club members as well as to increase membership.

  32. Developing leadership skills among members can increase a club’s strength and retention. Training club members to be leaders can come in many forms. Leaders can be developed through delegated tasks, through training, and through experience.

Extension “What is the role of the third-year member within the three-person membership team?” • Third-year member: • Focuses on extension of membership through new clubs • Senior member of the team with one year remaining • Chairperson of the committee • Serves on the club’s Board of Directors

Extension “What are the responsibilities of the third-year member?” The extension member is responsible for: • Researching and identifying areas for extension • Working with Lions involved in extension efforts • Communicating with the board of directors regularly regarding extension activities • Attending district and multiple district extension workshops

  43. Researching and identifying areas where extension is possible • By serving in the two previous positions this member is familiar with the club and community and can use their experience to fulfill their responsibilities in their final year on the committee.

  44. Working with Lions involved in extension efforts • It is important for a club to collaborate on extension efforts to be the most effective • The third-year member will work with other club members to encourage and assist with extension efforts

  45. Communicating with the board of directors regularly regarding extension activities • The extension member serves on the club’s board of directors and should make sure everyone is informed of extension activities.

Attending district and multiple district extension workshops • These workshops are informative and can help the extension member with their efforts and new ideas. • Workshops also increase knowledge which can be relayed to committee members to ensure an effective committee for years to follow.
