Specifically, students will be introduced to the history and philosophy of the therapy and counseling profession as well as multiple theoretical systems that have evolved over time. This course will provide learners the essential theoretical knowledge and basic skills essential in the practice of psychotherapy. The unit seeks to first build a foundation of cognitive information and then to integrate that knowledge with opportunities for both affective and behavioral growth by introducing learners to the fundamental techniques of therapeutic intervention the goal of which is to build a strong theory/practice link.

Describe a variety of assessment techniques and procedures while practicing appropriate strategies grounded in theory that create opportunities for client growth and functioning.

  16. Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 6. Describe how culture and ethnic diversity affects the practice of psychotherapy. 7. Recognize and discuss ethical and legal issues associated with the practice of counseling and appropriate professional conduct demanded by a variety of Codes of Ethics.

Analyze therapeutic interventions in light of current research and diverse populations in addition to demonstrating familiarity with the body of literature (print and electronic) that supports the profession. 9.
