  2. OFFICE, SHOPS AND RAILWAY PREMISES ACT (1963) • Ensures that employers provide minimum health and safety standards. • Key Points:- • Cleanliness • Heating, Lighting and Ventilation • Sanitary Conveniences i.e. toilets • Drinking Water • Fire Precautions

  3. HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK ACT (1974) • Outlines the responsibilities of employers AND employees in terms of health and safety • EMPLOYERS RESPONSIBILTIES • Provide and maintain suitable surroundings • Provide information and training • Provide protective clothing and equipment if required • Prepare a health and safety policy

  4. EMPLOYEES RESPONSIBILITIES • Take reasonable care for their own safety and those they work with • Co-operate with employer • Not to interfere or misuse equipment

  5. HEALTH AND SAFETY (FIRST AID) REGULATIONS (1981) • This was introduced to ensure that employers provide first-aid equipment and staff in the workplace. • There should be a first-aid box and a first aider and all staff should be aware of arrangements for first-aid

  6. FIRE PRECAUTIONS (PLACE OF WORK) REGULATIONS (1995) • Ensures that employers have taken reasonable steps to protect employees if there is a fire. • Employers should:- • Assess the fire risks in the workplace • Check fire detection systems and warning systems (the fire alarm) • Check evacuation routes • Produce fire-fighting equipment • Check all employees know the procedure • Check and maintain fire-safety equipment

  7. HEALTH AND SAFETY (DISPLAY SCREEN EQUIPMENT) REGULATIONS (1992) • Ensure that employers provide employees with comfortable working conditions if using IT. • Employers should: • Assess the workstation requirements. They should provide: • Adjustable controls on VDU • Adjustable and stable seating • Suitable workstation surface • Adjustable and separate keyboard

  8. Assess the computer environment, identify risks and minimise the risks • Vary work and allow regular breaks • Arrange eye tests and provide glasses as appropriate • Provide adequate training and information on health and safety in terms of their work

  9. HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE • HSE develop and enforce all Health and Safety legislation • An inspector can visit a firm without notice.

  10. Breaches of Health and Safety legislation could have the following penalties: • Serve an improvement notice – firm has to make improvements by a deadline • Serve a prohibition notice – firm is closed down • Fine of up to £20,000 • Imprisonment of employers for up to 6 months.
