Alliteration • Consonant sounds repeated at the beginning of the words. • Example : Caleb calls Chris cause he’s coming to California Caleb California Chris
Assonance • Repeated vowel sound in a line or lines of poetry
Hyperbole • Exaggeration often used for emphasis • Example : Man that’s like a million times harder
ONOMATOPOEIA • Words that imitate the sound they are naming. • Example : The boat hissed over the shore.
Metaphor • A direct comparison of two unlike things. • Example : My words are a river flowing.
Simile • A comparison of two things using “like” or “as” • Example : The cheetah ran as fast a car.
Imagery • Create mental images • Example : The dog ate pizza.
Idiom • An expression where the literal meaning of a word is not the meaning of the expression. • Example : Its raining cats and dogs.
Consonance • The repeated consonant sounds can be anywhere in the words. • Example : Don’t eat in that tent!
