  1. Baptism Pastor Bob Strachan

  2. The word “Baptize” comes from the Greek word “Baptidzo” meaning: to dip; or plunge; or submerge. • We find that according to Ephesians 4:5“One Lord, one faith, one baptism,” that this must be the only type of Baptism. • In Col. 2:12 and Rom 6:4 we find that a person is “Buried with him in baptism…” • In other words it means that baptism is a representation of Christ’s burial. • This again points to immersion because when something is buried it is immersed or put into the earth. Baptism basically symbolizes the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. What is Baptism?

  3. John the Baptist baptized in the river Jordan and also at a place called Ænon because there was much water there. • John 3:23 And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. • When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, the Bible says in Mark 1:10 that He came “up out of the water”. And when Philip baptized the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:38 “…they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.” And then in verse 39 they came “up out of the water”. • Pope Stephen II brought about the act of pouring for baptism in 754AD and sprinkling was officially sanctioned in 1311AD. What is Baptism?

  4. John the Baptist preached that a person should repent before baptism. • Matthew 3:7,8 “But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance” • Mark 1:4 John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. • There is a belief that baptism is how a person repents and gets rid of their sin. However this is false. The word translated “for” in the above verse is the Greek word “Eis (Eis)” which means “because of, or by reason of, or on account of). The same word is translated “unto” in certain scriptures. • Matthew 3:11 “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance…” Repentance before Baptism?

  5. Acts 2:38 “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.” • It shows that a person has had their sins forgiven and been saved. According to Acts 2:41 “they that gladly received his word were baptized”. • (Acts 8:36,37; Acts 16:14-15; Acts 16:30-34; Acts 18:8) • In short, a person according to the Bible must first Hear, then Believe and Repent and then be baptizedbecause they have repented. Repentance before Baptism?

  6. Matthew 3:15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. • Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; • Baptism is a work and thus who ever performs it can be credited with it. If it was for salvation then the person who baptizes is the mediator between GOD and man but that title belongs to Jesus only. Works of Righteousness

  7. Ephes. 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: [9] Not of works, lest any man should boast. • John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. • Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. • Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Saved by Faith

  8. John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. • John 3:5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of waterand of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. Saved by Faith

  9. John 3:3-7 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. [4] Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? [5] Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. [6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. [7] Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. • Nicodemus asks about physical rebirth. • Jesus shows the two births clearly in the following verse Saved by Faith

  10. [6] That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. [7] Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. • The Bible is its own dictionary in that it explains itself. • When you see common words and differing words you can use the common to figure out the rest. • There are two births referred to: One of water and one of Spirit. • Notice first the order – Water THEN Spirit • Then we see born of the flesh. A third birth? Born Again

  11. Then we see born of the flesh. A third birth? • No…look • WATER – SPIRIT • Then • FLESH – SPIRIT • Spirit is the same, right? So then the other two must be the same…so what does water represent? • Flesh! • You are born naturally from your mother and then BORN AGAIN in the Spirit Born Again

  12. 1 Peter 3:20-22 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. [21] The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: [22] Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. • Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? • Romans 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: LIKE FIGURE

  13. Galatians 3:26-27 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. [27] For as many of you as have been baptized intoChrist have put on Christ. • This word into is also the Greek “Eis” meaning because of Christ Because of Christ

  14. Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. • Acts 9:17-18 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. [18] And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized. • Acts 22:12-16 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there, [13] Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him. [14] And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth. [15] For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard. [16] And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. Salvation FIRST

  15. Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. • Luke 7:37-50 [47] Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. [48] And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. [49] And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? [50] And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace. Saved without Baptism
