  2. Introduction Last spring Sally’s mom purchased the seeds to a plant known as milkweed. Sally had never heard of this plant before and was quite interested in what it might look like when it was fully grown. As her mom began to plant the seeds in their garden she said, “Be sure to pay close attention to this plant as it grows Sally. Not only is it beautiful but it is very special in one other way that you must discover on your own.” Sally was so interested to discover this new and exciting plant’s secret that she purchased a journal to record its development.

  3. Your Challenge You and your partner are now on a mission with Sally to discover what special secret the plant milkweed holds. You will be watching the plant as it grows and will be recording developments as they occur. Your explorations will be conducted by traveling to certain websites that I have picked for you and your partner. Two key questions to ask as you uncover milkweed’s mystery are: • 1) What insects feed on milkweed’s leaves and/or flowers? • 2) Does milkweed function as a habitat? If so to who and how? Once you have discovered the answers to these questions we will begin to explore the second portion of our WebQuest.

But First: A Couple Rules Since this is a group project I would like each person to have an equalamount of time on the computer. • Each group member will be assigned a number either 1 or 2. • I will be dividing our class time into two sections: After the first 10 minutes is up you will hear a bell ring at which point the person in control of the computer and mouse will change from person #1 to person #2. • The “searcher” will be the group member on the computer and the “recorder” will be the other group member who is in charge of recording important information to your WebQuest journal. HAVE FUN!!!

Be sure to color your sketches and make them look as realistic as possible. • Next define the parts of an adult butterfly and label the anatomy within your journal. Is and adult butterfly an insect? How? • Is a caterpillar and insect? Why? • What animals other than butterflies have life cycles? • Why do you believe animals have life cycles?

REMEMBER… • Be sure to go in order of its life cycle. • This is a short story, so just a few paragraphs please. • Be creative: include the fun facts you have learned, give your butterfly a name and emotions, add illustrations. We will take turns sharing our stories at the writer’s chair when our WebQuests are complete!
