Selecting an Analytical/Instrumental “Technique” – Things to Consider….. • What accuracy is required?Defines how much time and effort you’ll need for analysis • How much sample is available? • What is the concentration range of the analyte?{2 and 3 determine how ‘sensitive’ the method must beand how wide a range of concentrations must be} • What components of the sample cause interference?Determines “selectivity” required • What are the physical and chemical properties of the samplematrix?Some (most!) methods are phase (s,l, or g) specific • How many samples are to be analyzed?

  4. Other things to consider…. • -speed • -ease and convenience • -skill required of operator • -cost and availability of equipment • -per-sample cost
