  3. Source of Unity • Trinity • Jesus Christ • One founder, whose one action brought reconciliation with the Father • God the Father • Reconciled with humanity through Jesus’ sacrifice • Holy Spirit • Dwells within each one of us thereby uniting us as one

  4. Diversity • Different gifts • Different services • Different workings • Different cultures • This diversity brings us into communion with each other when we work together as one. One worship, same essentials, diverse music, artwork or cultural additions

  5. Bonds of Unity • Faith • Statements of belief • Apostles’ Creed • Nicene Creed • Worship • Mass • Baptism • Eucharist • Apostolic Succession • Recognizing the authority of the same Church leaders • Pope (Petrine Succession) • Bishops

  6. Wounds to Unity • Sin threatens the Church’s unity • Our weakness to sin leads us to be influenced by society’s mores rather than Christ’s teachings • Attacks on the unity of the Church • Heresy • Conscious and deliberate rejection of a dogma of the Church • Schisms • Break with the Church over the authority of the Pope • Protestant Reformation • Conflicts within the Church that led certain persons to begin their own ecclesial communities

A Wounded Church • Catholics and other Christians • Only the Roman Catholic Church has kept the structure of leadership that Jesus established • Eastern Orthodox Church • Maintain apostolic succession but, they do not recognize the primacy of the Pope • Celebrate the same sacraments including Eucharist and Holy Orders • Protestant Churches (ecclesial communities) • Do not maintain apostolic succession • Do not have the fullness of the sacraments

  9. Ecumenism • An effort by Christians from different churches and ecclesial communities to be more open to one another and to restore unity among all Christians • Goals • To achieve better mutual understanding • To cooperate in various fields • Assisting the poor • Translating the Bible

Movement toward Unity • Grow in holiness through a constant renewal of the Church • Conversion of the heart • Pray for unity • Gain a deeper knowledge of each other and our traditions • Ecumenical dialogue for the leaders of the Church and for theologians • Collaboration between Catholics and other Christians in service to all humanity
