  1. Adobe Illustrator

  2. Adobe Illustrator • With Illustrator, you can create anything from simple graphics, icons and text to complex illustrations. • With Illustrator you are going to start with the basics, learning text and how to manipulate it to get what you want as a designer.

  3. New Document • Creating a new document in Illustrator is similar to PhotoShop. • You can change the size, width, height, units and orientation. • Always make sure that your new document is in RGB color mode.

  4. The Illustrator Window • Title Bar- contains the name of your document, magnification level, and color mode; it also contains the minimize and maximize, and close buttons. • Menu Bar- includes all of the Illustrator menus. A black triangle means there is a dropdown. • Art board- AKA the “paper”

  5. Scratch area- this is the area outside of the “paper” where you can store objects. Anything in this area will not be printed. • Toolbox- this is a palette containing tools that let you create, select, and manipulate objects. • Zoom text box- this is in the lower left hand corner of the window. This box lets you zoom in and out of the program. You can also click (control +) to zoom in and (control -) to zoom out.

  6. Palettes- windows containing features for modifying and manipulating Illustrator objects. Some of these palettes are categorized by groups. You can hide or find palettes by clicking on window on the top of the screen.

  7. First Exercise • You will read Lesson 1 ‘Getting started with Illustrator’ in the Adobe Revealed book. Take CORNELL notes on the important information. • Make sure to sketch images of the different tools, palettes and different windows you will encounter. • Make sure your notes are legible and neat!

  8. In Illustrator • You will OPEN a NEW document in Illustrator. • Make sure your document is 8.5 X 11(Letter) • You will use the Type tool to type your name six different times. I want you to use the same size and font for all six names. • You will set the Tracking tool at -100 for the first name, -50 for the second name, -10 for the third name, 0 for the fourth, 50 for the fifth and 200 for the sixth.

  9. After you have used the TRACKING tool, I want you to create your name six MORE times, each time changing around the size, font and gradient. • I want you to take two names and change them by flipping them upside down or rotating them.

  10. Save your document as “Illustrator Name Assignment”. • Write a short response to what happens when you Track. I want three to four sentences of what you have observed. Please do this on your document in the bottom right hand corner.

  11. How to Position Text on a Path • Using the Type on a Path Tool or the Vertical Type on a Path Tool, you can type along a straight or curved path. • This will open up more possibilities for YOU as the DESIGNER! • You can also “flip” the text to make it run the opposite direction on the opposite side of the path.

  12. Second Exercise • Creating a NEW document you will now practice using the vertical text tool and practicing typing on a path tool. • This tool can be tricky so be patient. • You will need to first make a curved line on your paper to type on. Click on the “pencil” tool and draw a curvy line. Then click on the “type” tool and click somewhere on the line. Then type your name. • Experiment with rotating, flipping and changing sizes.

  13. I would like you to create a design using the path text tool. • As the designer I want you to think about the colors you use and the design as a whole. Use the entire paper to create your design. • You may come up with your own words to create this design. You may also think of lyrics to your favorite songs or poems as long as they are “G” rated!!! • This should be saved as “Illustrator Design”

  14. Checklist • After practicing with some of the tools in Adobe Illustrator, please answer the following questions on either a lined piece of paper or email. (I need these by the beginning of class tomorrow) • Why do you think Adobe Illustrator is an important tool in Graphic Design? • Why would it be important to change colors, gradients, font and sizes on a flyer or poster?

  15. Checklist • Document #1 Name six times with six different tracking settings. Name six times with six different FONTS, SIZES and GRADIENTS Answer to response question on slide 10, in the bottom right hand corner. Saved as “Illustrator Name Assignment”

  16. Checklist • Document #2 • A creative and clever design using the path text tool and vertical text tool. • Use of different colors and different gradients to make the design more interesting. • Use of words. Either come up with your own or use lyrics from your favorite song or favorite poem. It must be “G” rated! • Saved as “Illustrator Design”
