  3. How do Scientist make breakthrough Discoveries? By using the scientific method? Get Lucky? How?

  4. Serendipity • In science, serendipity is the occurrence and development of beneficial events by mere chance • It is the act of finding something valuable when not looking for it • Is it serendipity that leads to scientific breakthroughs?

  5. No…one must be able to recognize that incident as a discovery

  6. Background Knowledge • Mark Erdman • Marine Biologist • On Honeymoon discovered an ancestor fish that was related to a 400 million year old fish

  7. An inquisitive mind • Wilhelm Roentgen’s discovered X-rays • Trying to pass electrons through air and saw across the room a screen of light formed when doing the experiment • Inquired -> Discovery

  8. Creative Thinking • Percy Spencer • Working with a company using microwaves • Noticed that the area would heat up • He began to use it to make popcorn • Don’t have to be the first one to see it but the first one to see it in a unique way • Ex: Steve Jobs (Calligraphy)

  9. Good Timing • Darwin’s theory of evolution • Mendel’s Pea Cross experiments • John Nash’s Game Theory • Nobel Laureates are like athletes…they do their work when they are young but get recognized when they are old (hall of famers)
