  2. What is GRIDSTART? • GRIDSTART is an Accompanying Measure Cluster project • similar to the IPv6 Cluster • funded by Research Networking Unit (K. Baxevanidis) • started 1st April 2002 • runs for 3 years • €1.5 million total funding • EPCC are coordinating partner

  3. Objectives are to • encourage interaction between EU Grid projects • identify synergies between different Grid application areas • consolidate technical advances • play a full role in setting Grid standards • stimulate early takeup by industry and commerce • be inclusive

Grids and IPv6 • the Grid community are mostly applications users of the networking infrastructure • GEANT is very important in this regard • Grid applications will push the limits of available bandwidth • but not yet • LHC will come on line in 2006 – several 10s of petabytes/yr • Lots of work on user requirements see: http://eu-datagrid.web.cern.ch/eu-datagrid/EUDocuments/Deliverables/ and find D7.1

Grids and IPv6 (continued) • in the networking context Grid projects are focussing on: • security • managing bandwidth (reservation etc) • QoS • handling NAT … • making “performance” networks perform • clearly lots of overlap with IPv6 • almost certainly the Grid community is reinventing the wheel

Grids and IPv6 (continued) • security • Globus toolkit gives security – X.509 certificates • can be used to encrypt at packet level • major user requirements from health and bio areas • managed bandwidth and QoS • Grid jobs may want to move VERY large datasets around • idea is to reserve bandwidth using resource broker • lots of experiments with DiffServ at present

Grids and IPv6 (continued) • handling NAT • whoever invented NAT has a lot to answer for • lots of work to overcome NAT issues • but of course IPv6 fixes them all • making performance networks perform • lots of work • best 10Gbps to date is 7Gbps on single application • GridFTP (part of Globus) • modified FTP for large sustained data transfers

  11. Conclusion • the Grid and IPv6 communities should be talking • Grid can benefit enormously from IPv6 • perhaps we should organise a joint event?
