Ancient Olympics • The origins of the Olympic movement stem from ancient Greece, where sports such as chariot racing, discus and javelin (in their ancient forms) were present. • Class Discussion: • The sports reflected the needs of society – discuss (think about work you have done on ancient/ tribal societies in wk 8 & 9) Contemp Studies yr 12

Decline of the Ancient Games • The Ancient Olympics fizzled out due to war and hard times. • For years the games were forgotten about, until the 19th Century when the games saw a revival by a Frenchman by the name of Pierre De Coubertin (founder of the modern Olympic games) Contemp Studies yr 12

  4. The Olympic Symbol The Olympic symbol consists of five different coloured rings which are interlinked. The rings represent the 5 continents of the world which come together to compete against each other in the games Contemp Studies yr 12

  5. Olympic prestige • The winning of an Olympic medal is arguably greeted with more prestige than any other. • The Olympic movement does not accept any form of misconduct or substance abuse Contemp Studies yr 12

  7. The IOC • The international Olympic Committee, based in Lausanne Switzerland is made up of 16 executives from various nations. • The IOC pass all laws and deal with any infringements made to these laws e.g. cheating, drug taking allegations etc. Contemp Studies yr 12

The IOC Cont…. • The IOC have the right to revoke an athletes’ medal if they are convicted of foul play, which has happened many times in the past e.g. Ben Johnson • The IOC also have the authority to ban a convicted athlete from taking part in amateur competition for however long a period they see fit Contemp Studies yr 12

  9. Ben Johnson The Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson is now more infamous, rather than famous for being caught taking drugs on more than one occasion, which led to a life ban from competing in professional sport Contemp Studies yr 12

The Nazi Olympics 1936 • This was so dubbed due to the fact that this Olympic games were held in Berlin at the height of the Nazi regime. • Initially non whites were banned from taking part but this was met with distain from the rest of the world. • Jessie Owens • Fisted black glove salute Contemp Studies yr 12

  13. Sport & Politics • Due to its high profile the Olympics has often been used as a vehicle to stage political and human rights. • Over the years the Olympics has been boycotted by many groups (and sometimes whole countries), for one reason or another Contemp Studies yr 12

Win Ethic Extremes The WIN ETHIC is traditionally associated with American culture, however it has now become a dominant culture in many societies, through: • Drugs • Cheating • Will to win • Pressure (from self and country) • Discussion & question • The will to win often overtakes the moral obligations of an athlete. • Discuss this statement from the viewpoint of an athlete who is prepared to bend the rules and from one who is not.
