Decline of the Ancient Games • The Ancient Olympics fizzled out due to war and hard times. • For years the games were forgotten about, until the 19th Century when the games saw a revival by a Frenchman by the name of Pierre De Coubertin (founder of the modern Olympic games) Contemp Studies yr 12

4. The Olympic Symbol The Olympic symbol consists of five different coloured rings which are interlinked. The rings represent the 5 continents of the world which come together to compete against each other in the games Contemp Studies yr 12

7. The IOC • The international Olympic Committee, based in Lausanne Switzerland is made up of 16 executives from various nations. • The IOC pass all laws and deal with any infringements made to these laws e.g. cheating, drug taking allegations etc. Contemp Studies yr 12

9. Ben Johnson The Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson is now more infamous, rather than famous for being caught taking drugs on more than one occasion, which led to a life ban from competing in professional sport Contemp Studies yr 12

Win Ethic Extremes The WIN ETHIC is traditionally associated with American culture, however it has now become a dominant culture in many societies, through: • Drugs • Cheating • Will to win • Pressure (from self and country) • Discussion & question • The will to win often overtakes the moral obligations of an athlete. • Discuss this statement from the viewpoint of an athlete who is prepared to bend the rules and from one who is not.
